In a letter to pro-life leaders Sept. 3, President Donald Trump promised to fully defund Planned Parenthood if elected for a second term.

“With your help,” he wrote, “I will win re-election, ensuring we have another four years to fight in the trenches for unborn children and their mothers.”

Trump also committed to continue nominating constitutionalist judges—to both the Supreme Court and lower courts—who will “not legislate an abortion agenda from the bench,” and pledged to “pass and sign into law the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act and the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act.”

Days before, pro-life activists lamented the lack of protections for the unborn included in the Trump Campaign’s second term agenda.

“Out of [the Trump Campaign’s] 50 ‘core priorities and goals’ why isn’t a single one the protection of preborn children or stopping the abortion industry from killing 2,300 innocent children every day?” tweeted Lila Rose, founder and president of Live Action.

Yet Trump made his priorities clear during the Republican National Convention, saying, “Democrat leaders talk about moral decency, but they have no problem with stopping a baby’s beating heart in the ninth month of pregnancy. … All children, born and unborn, have a God-given right to life.”

The Trump campaign also added a “Defending American Values” section to its agenda document, which explicitly vows to “protect unborn life through every means available.”

In response to the letter, Rose said that the president’s promise to defund Planned Parenthood is “a historic promise that would save hundreds of thousands of innocent lives and move us closer to a culture of life.”

Students for Life America President Kristan Hawkins told LifeNews:

“A great divide is widening between those who want to support a culture of life and those who want to require all Americans to be forcibly coerced in funding and supporting abortion through all nine months of pregnancy. In this race, voters must determine a candidate’s plans for abortion as this is literally a life and death issue.”
