China Represses Hong Kong Christians Under Olympic Shadow

A Hong Kong newspaper owned by the Chinese Communist government fired off a string of articles last week accusing Christian churches of fomenting unrest during the 2019 popular uprising, strongly hinting at a crackdown on Hong Kong Christians under the tyrannical “national security law” imposed by Beijing to crush the 2019 protest movement.

The Epoch Times on Tuesday noted the fiery editorials in the Beijing-controlled newspaper Ta Kung Pao “resemble a denunciation campaign of the kind portending a new crackdown by the Chinese Communist Party,” including one article that essentially accused Hong Kong bishop emeritus Cardinal Joseph Zen of being a subversive in league with jailed media tycoon Jimmy Lai.

Lai is Catholic, as is pro-democracy legislator Martin Lee, who is also under arrest. Lai was sentenced to 14 months in prison for “inciting riots,” a charge Ta Kung Pao strongly hinted Cardinal Zen was equally guilty of.

The Chinese Communist-directed editorials reportedly compared Christianity to the Falun Gong, a spiritual movement the Chinese government has marked for obliteration, and suggested Christian churches in Hong Kong are a secret training network for pro-democracy subversives.

“It is difficult for the government to regulate or eliminate these religious groups or individuals, despite the fact that they have committed many crimes,” the Ta Kung Pao editorialists sighed theatrically.

“The spate of articles also raises the question of whether the CCP is planning an imminent takeover of Hong Kong’s Christian schools, along with directing reprisals against the cardinal,” the Epoch Times warned, quoting an anonymous Hong Kong cleric who feared the government would go after a large number of Christian schools on the island as the opening salvo in an attack on the Church itself.

Freedom of religion is another right Hongkongers have long enjoyed that was denied to the Chinese, thanks to the promises Beijing made when taking control of the city from the United Kingdom in 1996. Unfortunately, none of those rights is looking very healthy today as Hong Kong’s autonomy is relentlessly attacked by the Chinese Communist Party.

In China, churches have been aggressively “Sinicized,” infusing them with Chinese Communist ideology and crushing churches that do not accept the control of the Chinese state. The sudden Chinese Communist Party media offensive against Hong Kong’s churches suggests “Sinicization” may be coming for them as well.

All four of the Ta Kung Pao articles approvingly quoted calls for greater government regulation of Hong Kong churches using various bureaucratic instruments.

Hong Kong Watch, a UK-based charity which researches and monitors threats to basic freedoms in HK, published an article warning that ”Hong Kong’s religious freedom now firmly in Beijing’s sights.”

“I fear that we are witnessing the early-warning signs of a creeping Chinese Communist Party takeover of control of religion. A subtle absorption of Hong Kong’s religious institutions into the Beijing-controlled, United Front Work Department-directed operations” they wrote. “The articles in Ta Kung Pao should not be ignored. When Beijing wants to signal its intentions, it has a habit of firing a warning shot via its media outlets first.”

Chinese Communist Party leader, Xi Jinping, has followed the footsteps of the CCP’s first leader Mao Zedong, who considered religion to be a “poison” which “retards the progress of the country.”

Under Xi’s rule, the Communist regime has destroyed churches, removed crosses, and attempted to “patriotize” houses of worship by demanding they remove Christian symbols and replace them with images of himself or Mao.

Harbingers Daily has covered many of the developments regarding the targeting of Christianity in China, including the banning of Bibles and the re-writing of Scripture to promote communist compliance.

The Bible says that in the last days before Christ’s return, “all who live godly in Christ shall suffer persecution” (2 Timothy 3:12). Although one could state that certain regions are more aggressive toward cracking down on Christians than others, we are currently seeing throughout the globe an increasing hostility toward followers in Jesus Christ, including in North America.

The Freedom To Stand On God’s Word: White House Commission Releases 200-Page Report On Safeguarding Religious Liberty

The stories, collected from seven hearings held by the commission, came from parents, students, school teachers, military chaplains, military service members and health care workers, as well as private sector employees and religious institution leaders. Referring to the witnesses, Commissioner Franklin Graham said that there is “a thread that runs through all … these [testimonies], and that is the thread of what’s right and having the guts to stand for what’s right.” The report said the witnesses’ “commitment to stand by their beliefs” has played a “consequential role in preserving religious liberty for all Americans.

Our Founders Unashamedly Endorsed A Recognition That The Affairs Of Men Are Subject To God’s Overarching Authority

I was alive in 1976, when America celebrated its bicentennial. Now, just fifty years later, many in our own country would rather denounce than celebrate our national heritage. Their scorn is heaped highest on the faith foundations our Founders unashamedly endorsed: reverence for God, respect for the Savior, and a recognition that the affairs of men are subject to His overarching authority. We’ve come a long way—in the wrong direction.

Thomas Jefferson’s ‘Separation Of Church And State’ Never Meant Keeping God Out Of Government

In context, it’s clear this wall of separation was not created to keep religion out of the State. It was simply intended to protect religious freedom and to place boundaries on the State’s control over the Church. In fact, the United States Capitol served as a church building for seven decades and Jefferson himself was a regular attendee. He attended so faithfully that he earned a reserved seat. On the Sunday after he wrote the letter to the Danbury Baptists, he attended church services at the still-under-construction Capitol.
