Virginia Gym Teacher Placed On Leave For Refusing To Use Preferred Pronouns: ‘It’s Abuse to a Child’

A Christian gym teacher in Virginia stood up at a Loudoun County Public Schools meeting on Tuesday during a discussion about “Rights of Transgender and Gender-Expansive Students” to say that he would not use a student’s preferred pronouns because that would be “lying to a child, it’s abuse to a child.”

Byron “Tanner” Cross has now been placed on leave after he stood up at the meeting, the New York Post reported. The gym teacher began his remarks by expressing love and empathy for transgender students.

My name is Tanner Cross and I am speaking out of love for those who are suffering from gender dysphoria,” said Cross, who teaches in Leesburg.

He then mentioned the recent “60 Minutes” segment that featured teenagers who had transitioned and later regretted the decision.

“It’s not my intention to hurt anyone, but there are certain truths that we must face when ready,” Cross said, according to the Post.

“I love all of my students, but I will never lie to them regardless of the consequences,” Cross added. “I’m a teacher, but I serve God first, and I will not affirm that a biological boy can be a girl and vice versa because it’s against my religion. It’s lying to a child, it’s abuse to a child, and it’s sinning against our God.”

On Friday, the school district confirmed to the Loudon Times-Mirror that Cross had been placed on paid administrative leave. The school had already emailed parents about the decision on Thursday.

Angela Cross, Tanner’s wife, posted on Facebook that her husband had been placed on leave for “speaking out” at the meeting. She made clear that it was not the school’s decision to place him on leave, but the school board’s and superintendent’s. She added (emphasis original):

We are not affiliated with any other group. We DO NOT CONDONE NAME CALLING or any other speech that does not stand on the truth of God’s word. We know that many with good intentions are trying to get the word out and we are thankful, but PLEASE SPEAK TRUTH WITH LOVE. We are all sinners, saved by the Grace of God and we love ALL of His children.

As Americans, we believe that every American has the right to their beliefs, but NO AMERICAN HAS THE RIGHT TO IMPOSE THEIR BELIEFS ON OTHERS.

Lastly and most importantly, Tanner wanted to say to all of his students and family at Leesburg Elementary that he is sad that they did not get to say goodbye and will do everything he can to be with you again soon.

“We spoke out first and foremost to protect the children and also to defend the first amendment rights of teachers and staff,” she added.

The Times-Mirror reported that Cross objected to a policy that said, “… staff shall allow gender-expansive or transgender students to use their chosen name and gender pronouns that reflect their gender identity without any substantiating evidence.”

Ken Ham in his recent article, “Feelings Do Not Determine Truth: ‘Modern Science’ Says There Are Six Sexes?,” wrote that those struggling with gender confusion don’t need “chemicals, body mutilating surgery, cross-dressing clothes, new pronouns, and a new name” what they need is the Gospel:

Such individuals need compassion and kindness—and they need the truth that comes from God’s Word and is confirmed by observational science. There are only two genders/sexes in humans: male and female (Genesis 1:27). That’s how God has made us, and trying to change one’s gender is ultimately a sinful rejection of God’s design. Those who struggle with gender dysphoria need Gospel truth. They need to know that their identity need not be rooted in themselves and their feelings but rather in Christ, his death, and resurrection for them, and his design for them and their body.

Those who struggle with gender dysphoria don’t need chemicals, body mutilating surgery, cross-dressing clothes, new pronouns, and a new name—they need the Gospel message that changes hearts and lives for eternity and gives them a new identity rooted in Christ.

In 2 Timothy 3:12, we are told that in the last days, persecution would come upon all who “live godly in Christ.” In other words, those who live by the Biblical and godly standards outlined in God’s word, which run contrary to the world. It would be the refusal to give up Biblical morality that would cause Christians to be hated/persecuted.

This same chapter also explains that others would be “despisers of those that are good,” people who “resist the truth,” and be “reprobate concerning the faith.”

In Romans chapter one, Paul warns against the sin of homosexuality and, more specifically, the celebration of it as a rebellion against God.

It is this reprobate mind that our society has fallen into, not in the celebration of sins alone (such as homosexuality, abortion, etc.) but also the attempt to force everyone, no matter their convictions, to celebrate and/or participate in such sins. In so doing, society brazenly disregards and violates religious freedom and freedom of conscience.

A Spiritual Battle: There Are Dark Clouds Looming Over The Once-Great City Of Minneapolis

September of 1950 was when Billy Graham’s organization was founded in Minneapolis. The Billy Graham Evangelistic Association was the very heart of powerful expansion of the saving message of Jesus Christ. Jan Markell's ministry carries on that all important push to get the message that Jesus saves from this geographical area. Is it any wonder Satan and his minions wage war on this twin-city area that serves as the center for evangelization of America and the world?

Three Reasons Why Christians Are So Ill-Equipped To Defend God’s Word

In over 50 years of traveling and speaking on Genesis, biblical worldview, and apologetics, one comment I continue to hear over and over again is, “I grew up in the church my whole life, and I’ve never heard any of this!” Why is it that so few Christians can answer the skeptical questions of our day that attack God’s Word—particularly, Genesis?

Abandoning The Duty Of A Shepherd: Should Pastors Speak About Politics From The Pulpit?

When a pastor preaches about what God has to say in His Word about gender, intimacy and marriage, sanctity of life, parental authority, stewardship of resources whether personal or societal, defending one’s family, threats of false doctrines and religions, etc., they are not being “political” but Biblical. Speaking on such topics does not imply that a pastor has an agenda; it simply means they are faithfully fulfilling their duty to proclaim the truth on such matters which God has laid out in His Word.
