Despite Heightened Persecution, Christianity Continues To Grow, Even In The Most Hostile Nations

Even as roughly 380 million believers face persecution every year, Christianity continues to grow—even in the most hostile nations where faithfulness commonly means imprisonment, torture or death.

International Christian Concern’s (ICC) recently released 2026 Global Persecution Index began with an urgent call: “Our brothers and sisters in Christ are beaten, imprisoned and even killed for their faith. In many countries, it is illegal for them to share the Gospel. We must stand with them.” Each new page of the report paints a sobering yet hopeful picture of global religious freedom facing rapidly growing persecution.

Among the most alarming trends:

  • Growing “religious nationalism” that snuffs out religious freedom.
  • “Transnational repression,” where governments hunt religious minorities and dissidents beyond their borders.
  • Tightening state control over religious organizations.
  • Rising terrorism and authoritarianism fueling violence and oppression.
  • Foreign regimes leveraging Western technology to supercharge persecution.

Yet amid the darkness, hope persists. Despite relentless repression, Christianity remains and is even expanding in surprising places like Iran and Asia. Believers are refusing to stay silent.

“While authoritarianism remains entrenched, it faces growing resistance,” the report notes, adding, “Turkey’s opposition movements have defied crackdowns to organize mass demonstrations demanding free elections and the restoration of civil liberties. And in Iran, the courage of women and community leaders has fueled ongoing protests that expose the regime’s moral and political fragility.”

The 124-page report tracks developments in 22 countries, 13 of which carry the U.S. State Department’s “Country of Particular Concern” designation, indicating “systematic, ongoing and egregious violations of religious freedom.”

In South Asia, militant Hindu groups are increasingly targeting Christians, while local governments in some regions have enacted anti-conversion laws that “criminalize basic religious expression.” In Myanmar, Buddhist nationalism is routinely invoked to justify razing entire Christian villages.

In Turkey and certain communist regimes, “transnational repression” is employed using global intelligence networks to surveil, intimidate and even kidnap exiled critics and religious minorities. Communist agents, in particular, pressure foreign governments to repatriate asylum seekers and harass diaspora communities across Asia, Africa and the West.

Regimes seeking total dominance now dictate clerical appointments, online sermons and even the architecture of church buildings.

Islamist terrorism continues to claim lives in devastating numbers. In parts of Africa, jihadists routinely massacre dozens of Christians at a time. Worldwide, “thousands of Christians have been killed or displaced in attacks designed to eradicate the Christian presence from contested territories,” the report stated.

Authoritarianism, meanwhile, crushes any hint of dissent. In Iran, “the morality police have returned to the streets, enforcing harsh religious codes with impunity” against those who deviate from the regime’s strict Islamist ideology.

The pressure isn’t limited to distant lands. ICC noted that “while Christians in Western nations don’t experience the same horrific persecution that believers in other hot spots face, religious freedom in corners of the West is eroding.” (Read about rising anti-Christian hate crimes across Europe).

Restrictions on women across the globe are also intensifying. “In countless communities around the world, women in disfavored religious groups face especially severe restrictions on their rights and freedoms,” the report emphasized—nowhere more starkly than in Afghanistan, where women “remain almost entirely excluded from public life under Taliban rule.”

ICC President Shawn Wright underscored the Biblical reality: “Scripture reminds us that persecution is not an anomaly but an expectation for those who follow Christ. … As we look across the global landscape, these pressures are not diminishing—they are intensifying.”

“As a ministry,” he added, “we are deeply concerned about the growth and spread of radical Islam and other hostile ideologies that seek to suppress or eradicate the Christian witness. We recognize that evil forces are actively working to oppose the church and hinder the advance of the Gospel.”

The trends of intimidation, displacement and violence “are not abstract. They represent real men, women and children who suffer for the Name of Christ. Scripture calls us to ‘remember the prisoners, as though in prison with them.’”

Nadine Maenza, co-chair of the International Religious Freedom roundtable, echoed that call to action: “Our prayers, advocacy and support are ultimately offered unto Christ Himself, who reminds us in Matthew 25:40: ‘Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.’”

She concluded that “working together to strengthen religious freedom conditions—both in these countries and globally—is urgent.”

Dehumanizing Ideological Opponents: Roughly One-Third Of Democrats Would Feel ‘Positive’ If Trump Were Assassinated

In the wake of Trump’s ear being grazed by a would-be assassin’s rifle bullet during a 2024 campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, online jokes from some of the president’s harshest critics were all but endorsements of the shooter’s actions. And the cheering by some on the left of conservative activist Charlie Kirk’s assassination at a Utah university last year seems to track with the latest polling.  Daniel Darling, director of the Land Center for Cultural Engagement at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and an assistant professor of faith and culture, told Decision that the polarization that exists stems largely from hope in Christ being replaced by hope in manmade political solutions.

Shockingly Unfair: Biological Males Have Taken 2,293 First-Place Medals From Female Athletes, Research Reveals

New research has revealed the stunning extent to which transgender-identifying males have taken over women’s sporting events, finding that almost 2,300 first-place medals have been taken by males. Women’s sports advocates say that federal legislation must be passed to once again restore a fair playing field for women and girls nationwide.

This Is Not Political—This Is Biblical: What’s Really At Stake In The Virginia Elections?

According to Pew Research and First Liberty, 90 million self-identified evangelical Christians in America are eligible to vote. We are the largest voting bloc in America, but tragically, of the 90 million eligible to vote, 40 million do not vote, and 15 million are not even registered. The majority of Christians sit it out, and as a result, we allow evil and are ceding ground to Satan. When evil policies are enacted and Christians sit it out, we have no one to blame but ourselves. Christians need to let their voices be heard and stand up for God's definition of marriage and sanctity of life from the womb to the tomb.
