US And European Countries Seek To Identify and Prosecute ISIS Militants for ‘Barbaric’ Crimes Against Iraqi Christians

A United Nations team involving leaders from the United States and several European countries is working to identify and bring to justice ISIS militants responsible for the enslavement, genocide and displacement of Iraqi Christians over the last decade.

A conference of the United Nations Team to Promote Accountability for Crimes Committed by Daโ€™esh/ISIL (UNITAD) met Sept. 1 in Erbil, Iraq, to cast a spotlight on the ongoing effort to identify the ISIS militants responsible for perpetrating the crimes, largely against Christians, in Iraq.

Simultaneous to ISISโ€™ reign of terror in Iraq after most U.S. troops left in 2011, the Christian population, now estimated at between 160,000 and 250,000, largely fled as refugees to the mountainous Kurdish regions of northern Iraq to escape deadly persecution. Two decades ago, the Iraqi Christian population was estimated to be 1.5 million.

Christian Ritscher, a U.N. special adviser and head of UNITAD, commended the Christian community leaders who also gathered at the conference, saying, โ€œYour togetherness and your resilience are inspirational, not just to the Christian community in Iraq, but also to us at UNITAD.

โ€œISILโ€™s [also known as IS or ISIS] ideology thrived on violence, sparing neither the people of Iraq nor their diverse cultures and beliefs. โ€ฆ As we work in pursuit of justice for all victims and survivors, those who suffered from ISILโ€™s atrocities, we keep in heart and mind one of UNITADโ€™s core principles: there is no hierarchy in victims.โ€

Noting that the terrorists targeted churches, monasteries, cemeteries, Christian symbols and ancient archaeological sites in โ€œbarbaric attacks, rooted in hate and inhumanity,โ€ Ritscher said individual case files are being built against those responsible.

โ€œThe identities of these ISIL members are corroborated by testimonial evidence, ISIL internal documents and case files provided by the Iraqi judiciary,โ€ he told the group.

Safeen Dizayee, head of the Kurdistan Regional Governmentโ€™s (KRG) Department of Foreign Relations, told the conference, โ€œChristians are the indigenous people of this land and must continue their lives with dignity and security,โ€ according to International Christian Concern. He emphasized how his region has been a safe haven for Iraqiโ€™s remaining Christians.

Meanwhile, for the U.S. military, rooting out ISIS terrorists is an ongoing priority. In 2022, U.S Central Command reported the deaths of 886 ISIS operatives during anti-terrorism operations in Iraq and Syria, and another 374 suspected terrorists detained by U.S. troops.

In November 2022, [..] Bashar Warda, told a group at a global economic summit that Christianity in Iraq was at the โ€œvery edge of extinction.โ€

โ€œShould an ancient, peaceful people be allowed to simply perish without comment, without objection?โ€ Warda asked. โ€œIt seems an almost absurd question to ask in these modern times, does it not? Well then, we object. We object that one faith should have the right to kill another. We object.โ€

According to Open Doors, Christians should pray three things for their fellow Iraqi believers: For peace and stability to come to Iraq so Christians can return home; for an increase in understanding and cooperation between Christian denominations there; and for courage, as well as Godโ€™s protection, for new believers from Muslim backgrounds, whose lives are in danger if discovered.

Editor’s Note: “ISIS” to “ISIL” โ€” a slight towards Israel?

The Islamic State was originally referred to as “ISIS” (the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria), however, after the group gained in notoriety, many, including then-President Barack Obama, alternatively began referring to ISIS by the acronym “ISIL” (Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant). The seemingly inconsequential change is, in fact, a significant distinction. Including the “Levant” expands the Islamic State’s territory to encompass Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, and the entirety of the Jewish State of Israel.

A Growing Hostility Toward Jesus’ Return… From The Church?

I recently received an email from a woman who detailed how her church has become hostile to those of us anticipating Jesusโ€™ return. Scoffers increase every year as we get closer to Christ's returnโ€”despite the signs of the times exploding, which should serve as a wake-up call for how late the hour is. The email I received also described denigrating names that were being given to people like her who were looking up, awaiting Jesusโ€™ returnโ€”names like โ€œEnd Times Eddie,โ€ โ€œApocalyptic Anita,โ€ or โ€œDoom and Gloom June.โ€ I wish I were making this up! This is just one more church saying, โ€œCome Lord Jesusโ€ฆ but not too soon.โ€

Concessions and Compromise: There Is No Benefit To Negotiating With The Devil

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's funeral was replete with calls of โ€œdeath to America,โ€ โ€œdeath to Israel,โ€ and direct calls for the revenge killing of Donald Trump. Israel warned the United States of a fresh plot to assassinate the President, with US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee later confirming the allyโ€™s intelligence. The concrete nature of the threat led Trump to suddenly ditch the new Air Force One planeโ€”gifted by Qatarโ€”on his way back from Turkey, and issue a warning to Iran that a list of โ€œinstructionsโ€ has been given, should the regime succeed in plots to kill him. What was gained from compromise with the enemy?

Will America Last Another 250 Years?

Looking back, there can be no denying that God has indeed shed His graceโ€”His unmerited favorโ€”on our land, from sea to shining sea. But does our national โ€œsoulโ€ encourage self-control? Do our laws champion ordered liberty? Is our success tempered with nobleness? Is brotherhood the defining characteristic of any good we aspire to reflect? By all of those measures, America seems decidedly adrift. We are drifting farther and farther from Natureโ€™s Godโ€”the Ruler of the Universe our Founders called upon and credited with for our celebrated independence.
