West Hollywood has become one of the latest far-left cities to formally recognize polyamorous relationships, with the City Council voting unanimously Tuesday to establish a domestic partnership registry for groups of three or more people.
The new ordinance allows individuals involved in multi-partner relationships to officially document their arrangements with the city, extending certain local protections to relationships involving more than two people.
Under the measure, participants must mutually consent to the registration, and incestuous relationships are prohibited. The registry will also be available to individuals who reside outside West Hollywood.
Although registering does not provide the same legal status as marriage or domestic partnerships recognized by California, it offers limited benefits, including hospital visitation privileges and certain protections for tenants.
The decision follows an earlier effort by city officials to expand protections for people in nontraditional relationships. In March, the City Council approved an anti-discrimination measure covering polyamorous relationships and directed municipal staff to develop a framework for recognizing partnerships involving multiple individuals.
Councilmember Chelsea Lee Byers introduced that earlier legislation after being approached in 2025 by Christina Fialho, founder of Rewrite the BiLine, an organization advocating for sexual representation in media.
Fialho welcomed the latest development, suggesting the registry could pave the way for broader recognition of polyamorous arrangements.
โThis law is just the beginning,โ Fialho told the Los Angeles Times.
She argued that formal documentation could make it easier for people in multi-partner relationships to navigate everyday responsibilities, including picking up children from school, where proof of a recognized relationship may be useful.
Fialho, who identifies as bisexual, also said the measure makes her โfeel protectedโ and could encourage others to envision relationships receiving recognition that previously seemed unattainable.
โI think it makes it possible for people to dream about a future they once thought was out of reach,โ she added.
West Hollywood is not the first municipality to adopt such a policy. Somerville and Cambridge, Massachusetts, were among the earliest American cities to establish local recognition for domestic partnerships involving more than two individuals.
The latest ordinance adds West Hollywood to a small but growing number of woke municipalities expanding their definitions of domestic partnerships beyond traditional two-person relationships.
