The U.S. Senate voted June 5 to block the so-called โRight to Contraception Act,โ which supporters said would protect womenโs access to contraception. But conservatives say the bill would actually go much further and is part of a continuing campaign that Sen. Katie Britt (R-Alabama) called a โsummer of scare tacticsโ being pushed by Democrats.
Conservative leaders pointed out that the billโs vague wording could clear the way for minors to undergo transgender surgeries, as well as receive puberty blockers and procure abortions. The billโs text reads, in part, that it is designed โto protect an individualโs ability to make decisions about their body, medical care, family, and lifeโs course.โ
It also includes a loose definition of contraception, stating that it is โany drug, device, or biological product intended for use in the prevention of pregnancy, whether specifically intended to prevent pregnancy or for other health need.โ
โIn this case, the so-called โRight to Contraception Actโ is actually a Trojan horse for a very sinister aim: to establish in federal law a right for minors to undergo sterilizing sex-change procedures,โ said American Principles Project President Terry Schilling. โThe opening in the text is plain as day. And all it will take is one far-left judge to interpret it this way for every state-level protection for gender-confused kids to be completely wiped out.โ
Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, said the Right to Contraception Act โhas less to do with access to contraception than with funneling taxpayer dollars to the abortion industry.โ
Sen. Britt added, โThis is continuing the campaign of fearmongering weโve already seen. Contraception is available in every state across the nation. โฆ The bill tramples on foundational religious liberty protections that have long been bipartisan.โ

The bill is viewed as another attack on the Biblical worldview as it seeks to override religious freedom protections, target the sanctity of life, and hinder parental rights.
Tony Perkins, President of the Family Research Council (FRC), called the bill a “red herring,” adding that “there is no crisis of access to contraception.”
“The bill’s vague language could be used to overturn commonsense conscience and parental consent laws and guarantee a right to contraceptives that can act as abortifacients, mifepristone (one of the pills in the chemical abortion regimen), and possibly even gender transition procedures,” Perkins warned.
FRC further highlighted that if enacted, the bill would “be the first law to exempt itself from the federal Religious Freedom Restoration Act.”
