Sanders Urges giving Chunk of US Military Aid to Gaza instead; Calls Netanyahu Gov. Racist

SOURCE: (Times of Israel)

Isaiah 5:20-21 KJV โ€“ย โ€œWoe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter! Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight!โ€

Democratic presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders said Monday that part of the $3.8 billion in annual US military assistance to Israel should instead go toward humanitarian relief in Gaza.

The Vermont senator, speaking at the annual J Street national conference, vowed to use American military aid as leverage to get Israel to roll back its settlement enterprise and enter peace negotiations with the Palestinians, an idea that has gained ground among some Democrats.

โ€œI would use the leverage of $3.8 billion,โ€ he told the confab, referring to the US-Israel memorandum of understanding brokered under the Obama administration. โ€œIt is a lot of money, and we cannot give it carte blanche to the Israeli government, or for that matter to any government at all. We have a right to demand respect for human rights and democracy.โ€

The 2020 candidate said he would condition US aid to Israel on Jerusalem taking tangible steps to reach a two-state solution and improve the conditions of Palestinians living in the battered coastal enclave.

โ€œMy solution is, to Israel, if you want military aid youโ€™re going to have to fundamentally change your relationship to the people of Gaza,โ€ he said. โ€œI would say that some of the $3.8 billion should go right now to humanitarian aid in Gaza.โ€

โ€œMy proposal in terms of Israeli-Palestinian efforts is not a radical proposal,โ€ he went on. โ€œAll it says is that we need an even-hand proposal for both people. What is going on in Gaza right now, for example, is absolutely inhumane. It is unacceptable. It is unsustainable.โ€

He made the comments while being interviewed on stage by former Obama officials Ben Rhodes and Tommy Vietor, who now host the popular Pod Save the World podcast.

Sanders also castigated US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as unethical while onstage.

โ€œYouโ€™re looking at leaders, one is going to be impeached, the other one may end up in jail, so I donโ€™t know how much credibility they have, actually in terms of integrity,โ€ Sanders said.

Sanders was one of five 2020 Democrats who attended the liberal Mideast advocacy groupโ€™s conference, where he said his approach to solving the intractable Israeli-Palestinian conflict would be to โ€œdemandโ€ that Israel come to the table with the Palestinians toย โ€œnegotiate an agreement that works for all parties.โ€

Others who spoke at the conference included South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg, Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar, former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julian Castro and Colorado Senator Michael Bennet.

The two frontrunners, former Vice President Joe Biden and Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren, addressed the gathering via video.

Buttigieg and Warren also supported using the assistance as a means to pressure Israel, although in more restrained terms.

Buttigieg said that if Israel followed through on Netanyahuโ€™s pledge to annex the West Bank settlements, that would force him to re-evaluate the levels of aid the United States give to Israel.

โ€œWe have a responsibility โ€ฆ to ensure that US taxpayer support for Israel does not get turned into taxpayer support for a move like annexation,โ€ he told a crowd at the Washington Convention Center.

Last week, Warren said cutting aid to pressure Israel was โ€œon the table.โ€

Biden, Castro, Klobuchar and Bennet said leveraging the aid would be counterproductive.

Biden was perhaps the most emphatic in defending assistance to Israel.

โ€œIsraelis wake up every morning facing an existential threat,โ€ he said in his video message. โ€œThatโ€™s why we always have to be adamant that Israel must be able to defend itself.โ€

Sanders also highlighted his Jewish heritage and identity while lambasting the Netanyahu government as racist.

โ€œI am very proud to be Jewish and look forward to being the first Jewish president,โ€ he said. โ€œI spent many months on a kibbutz in Israel. I believe absolutely not only in the right of Israel to exist but the right to exist in peace and security. Thatโ€™s not a question,โ€

โ€œBut what I also believe,โ€ he continued, โ€œis the Palestinian people have a right to live in peace and security as well. It is not anti-Semitism to say that Netanyahuโ€™s government has been racist.โ€

The Prophetic Significance Of Socialism’s Rise In America

The rise of Socialism has profound implications for the future of our nation and, given the fact that America is the global leader, it also has ramifications for the entire globe. It's nothing short of meteoric. However, beyond those concerns, the popularity of Socialism also has strong prophetic overtones that I believe will pave the way for the rise of the world's final great tyrant: the antichrist.

Christians Are Not Called To Fear The Future, They Are Called To Understand It

Indeed, it has become commonplace among many churches and Christian circles to avoid and even dismiss the subject of Bible prophecy. The rationale behind such a decision is often motivated by fear of teaching on matters that can be viewed as controversial or contentious. Instead of expounding on prophetic Scripture that may be viewed as difficult or having the potential for objections and debate, some churches choose to simply overlook, omit, and neglect these portions of Godโ€™s Word.
