Pompeo: US & Allies Intercepted Iranian Weaponry Being Transferred to Houthi Rebels in Yemen

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo reveals that Iranian weaponry being smuggled to Yemen was intercepted by the US and other international military partners back in June; Pompeo calls on the UN Security Council to extend the arms embargo.

Similar to events of the past, in June, the US and their international military partners seized a significant transfer of weaponry that was going from Iran to the Houthi rebels in Yemen. As a result, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is urging the United Nations to extend the arms embargo on Iran that is set to expire in a few months.

Pompeo stated, “The Security Council must extend the arms embargo on Iran to prevent further conflict in the region. No serious person can possibly believe Iran will use any weapon it receives for peaceful ends.” The US has not only issued several economic sanctions on the Islamic Republic but as part of its ‘maximum pressure’ campaign, is also holding Iran’s military activity accountable.

China and Russia, for whatever reason, are reported to oppose the US’ plea for an extension on the arms embargo.

According to Pompeo, the weapons that were confiscated include 21 surface-to-air and land-attack missiles, 200 rocket-propelled grenades (RPG), 1,700 rifles, and several other weapons.

The US made a similar discovery in 2019 and earlier in 2020. Both of which the Iranians denied.
