Advancing American Freedom, a conservative nonprofit, has written a letter to the Federal Trade Commission asking the agency to investigate how the schools are using federal funds to encourage gender-affirming care for students.
The nonprofit alleges that schools are using misinformation and deception to encourage treatments that may cause life-long harm.
“Children should not be pawns in the culture war,” AAF wrote in a comment obtained by The Daily Signal. “We hope the FTC will protect them from fraudulent GAC [gender-affirming care] practices.”
The comments come at the end of a 60-day public inquiry the FTC launched “to better understand how consumers may have been exposed to false or unsupported claims about gender-affirming care.” That public inquiry followed an FTC workshop on gender-affirming care for minors in which medical experts, whistleblowers, detransitioners and parents of detransitioners testified that gender-affirming medical practitioners have deceived consumers.
In the letter, the nonprofit urges the FTC to investigate “as far as is consistent with the commerce clause the extent to which school districts, operating with federal funding, encourage GAC and create a market of individuals that face life-threatening consequences should they ever choose to discontinue GAC,” the letter said.
The FTC should also investigate school clubs that encourage gender-affirming care to discover where they receive their information on gender dysphoria and what resources they recommend to students.
