Israel And Prophecy: There Is A Cost When Churches Neglect To Study And Teach The Whole Counsel Of God

JIm Showers

As I travel and speak, people often tell me they no longer hear teaching about Israel and Bible prophecy in their churches. Their comments reveal two distinct realities: (1) There once was a time when they did hear such teaching in church, and (2) preaching what God says about Israel and prophecy has fallen out of favor.

As a pastorโ€™s son, I realize many topics need to be addressed from the pulpit, and pastors have less time than ever to communicate Godโ€™s truth. In many churches, the pastor has merely 30 to 45 minutes on the weekend to speak to his flock. Without the Sunday evening services and midweek Bible studies that were the norm in many churches in bygone years, Sunday morning has become the pastorโ€™s only time to teach the Word to his congregation.

Given such limitationsโ€”and with the ever-growing emphasis on Reformed Theology in many circlesโ€”the value of studying Israel and prophecy has diminished.

But there is a cost to neglecting the study and teaching of this significant part of Godโ€™s counsel. A consequence is that fewer people in the pews stand behind Israel and the Jewish people. This is a troubling trend because Israelโ€™s strongest Gentile supporters are evangelical Christians; but that may not be the case in the future.

I hear some people say studying prophecy is a waste of time because it divides people. They believe preaching Christ is what is necessary to save and unite people. When I visited the Ark Encounter in Williamstown, Kentucky, I was struck by the fact that Noah, whom God calls โ€œa preacher of righteousnessโ€ (2 Pet. 2:5), warned the world of Godโ€™s impending judgment and the only way to escape it. When Noah preached, he was teaching prophecyโ€”a message of future judgment given to him by God. The judgment had not yet occurred, but it was certain to come because God said so.

When we preach prophecy today, we, too, are warning people that a judgment of God will someday fall on this world for its rebellion against Him; and the only way to escape it is through faith in His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ. When the church fails to teach prophecy, Christians fail to obtain a fully developed worldview and are unable to see all that God is doing to redeem the world.

They lose the vital connection with Israel and fail to warn others of their need to avoid Godโ€™s judgment through faith in Jesus. This consequence is the greatest cost of not teaching what God says about Israel and prophecy. For you see, Godโ€™s redemptive plan goes through Israel. Israel is the conduit of our blessingsโ€”past, present, and future.

A few days before Jesus went to the cross, He said the days leading to His return will be like the days of Noah. People will be focused on enjoying life and ignoring Godโ€™s warning of judgment until it is too late (Mt. 24:38โ€“39). It may just be that we are living in days like Noahโ€™s, as Jesusโ€™ return is drawing very near.

Gov’t Driven Attacks On Parental Authority: Modern Policies Have Become Destructive To The Family

The real question is how our society reached the point where states believe they have the authority to cut parents out of decisions that can permanently shape or, in some cases, end a childโ€™s life. On almost no other issue โ€” except abortion โ€” would such deliberate disregard for parental authority be tolerated. That tells us a lot. At its core, this conflict reflects a deeper cultural departure from a biblical understanding of family and responsibility.

Why A Post-Tribulation Rapture Directly Contradicts The Words Of Scripture

The whole idea that we need further purification is wrong on so many levels, as it is a sister belief in a partial Rapture of only faithful saints. If the words of Ephesians chapters 1 and 2 along with those of Romans 8 are true, then we must thoroughly reject the idea of our need as regenerated saints to experience any further cleansing. Yes, the Lord tests and strengthens our faith in this life, but thatโ€™s an entirely different ball game than saying living believers will need a purgatory-type experience during the Tribulation.

From Ancient Persia To Modern Iran: Examining Today’s War Through The Lens Of The Book Of Esther

As Israel observes the feast of Purim, the barrages of Iranian missiles underscore the Jewish people's resilience in a whole new light. As Jews worldwide gather to eat hamantaschen and read the book of Esther for the feast of Purim, Israeli soldiers remain at their posts from Gaza to the North. Israeli civilians walk in fear, as a rain of missiles launch from the same geographical location at the center of the epic story detailed in the book of Esther.
