Charges Dropped Against UK Woman For Silently Praying: ‘Her Story Has Put The World On Notice’

After a six-month investigation, police in Birmingham, England have dropped charges against a woman arrested last March for praying silently near an abortion clinic, and apologized for the length of time they took to clear her.

After Isabel Vaughan-Spruceโ€™s arrest on March 6, video of her conversation with the arresting police officer went viral. Police accused Vaughan-Spruce of violating a local order that bans activities, including prayer, that could constitute protesting within an โ€œexclusion zoneโ€ near abortion clinics.

โ€œYouโ€™ve said youโ€™re engaging in prayer, which is the offense,โ€ an officer is heard saying on the video.

โ€œSilent prayer,โ€ replied Vaughn-Spruce, director of the U.K. March for Life.

โ€œYou were still engaging in prayer, which is the offense,โ€ the policeman answers.

The conclusion of Vaughan-Spruceโ€™s case and the cityโ€™s apology came a week after U.K. Home Secretary Suella Braverman wrote in an open letter that โ€œsilent prayer, within itself, is not unlawful.โ€

Vaughan-Spruce said in a statement, โ€œThis isnโ€™t 1984, but 2023. I should never have been arrested or investigated simply for the thoughts I held in my own mind.โ€

Her arrest in March marked the second time Birmingham police had arrested Vaughan-Spruce for praying near an abortion clinic. Police arrested her in 2022, then dropped those charges last February, although they signaled they might resume prosecution of her at a later date. Police then arrested her again in March on the same charge.

With charges now dropped and the law seemingly clarified, Vaughan-Spruce said she plans to continue silent prayer on public sidewalks near abortion clinics.

โ€œThe arduous process of this criminal ordeal has been the punishment for Isabel,โ€ said Jeremiah Igunnubole, legal counsel for ADF UK, who aided Vaughan-Spruceโ€™s legal defense. โ€œMoreover, her story has put the world on notice that fundamental freedoms are vulnerable in the UK.

โ€œThere is now an urgent need for legal changes to stem the tide of policing by politics. We hope the decision from West Midlands Police that they will not prosecute free thought, alongside the Home Secretaryโ€™s public commitment to protecting silent prayer, will be reflected in legislation, guidance, and practice,โ€ Igunnubole stated.

On Everybodyโ€™s List: Jews Face ‘The Greatest Threat Ever’

Britainโ€™s most senior police officer warned that antisemitism has reached unprecedented levels, saying Jewish communities face their greatest threat to date as authorities confront a series of attacks and rising tensions. It is not uncommon today to hear people state that the Jew-hatred of the 21st Century is comparable to the hatred that led to near genocide of the Jews in the 1930s. Mark Rowley, head of the Metropolitan Police, said British Jews are being targeted by a wide range of extremist actors, which he linked, in part, to the influence of social media. He states, โ€œThe ghastly fact is that Jews are on everybodyโ€™s list, all of those hateful groups, whether youโ€™re extreme right, whether youโ€™re extreme left, whether youโ€™re Islamist terrorist, whether youโ€™re right-wing terrorist.โ€

Barna Research Finds Shared Concern Over AI Misinterpreting Scripture, Being Used To Determine Theology

Ask a chatbot about a disputed Bible verse and you may get a tidy answer. Ask Americaโ€™s pastors about the AI response, and you get a warning: That tidy answer could be a real problem. The Barna Group recently highlighted findings from twoย surveys, conducted in partnership with Gloo for the State of the Church initiative, that land on a common concern. Artificial intelligence misinterpreting Scripture is a shared worry for 74% of U.S. adults. Among practicing Christians, the figure climbs to 83%, and for pastors, it reaches 94%. Even 77% of non-practicing Christians say they are concerned.

โ€˜A Firm Reliance On The Protection Of Divine Providenceโ€™: Finding The Way Back As One Nation Under God

It is no secret that America has largely turned its back on God. Children are encouraged to find their own truth from a young age, and mentions of God in our public schools are brushed aside or removed. Church attendance is rapidly declining as self-help strategies promise the answers to lifeโ€™s problems. Weโ€™ve traded Divine guidance for subjective truthโ€”โ€œitโ€™s up to me decide what is right and wrong.โ€ And even the concept of biological sex and gender is up to the preference of each individual. It is clear that secularism has infiltrated every aspect of society, and the results are catastrophic. The further we stray from God, the deeper we sink into hopelessness.
