A Battleground: When You Come To Salvation, You Inherit An Enemy

When I asked Jesus to come into my life in July of 1973, I experienced a deep joy and peace. I felt as though a burden had been lifted from me. But I soon learned that I had also inherited His enemy.

I discovered the Christian walk includes both abundant life and abundant warfare. I had peace deep within, but at the same time, a battle. The Prince of Darkness, whom I had once followed, now hated my new Friend, so he turned his attention to me.

In Ephesians 6, Paul takes us to the battlefield. โ€œFinally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devilโ€ (vv. 10-11).

The truth is, as a Christian, youโ€™re a target. Satan is out to destroy your life, to neutralize your influence, and to make you ineffective. Therefore, none of us can be spiritual pacifists. The Christian life is not a playground; itโ€™s a battleground.

Jesus makes it clear the Devil is realโ€”heโ€™s a deeply malevolent and intelligent spiritual being. Heโ€™s studied human nature for a long time and knows how to craft temptations that are tailor-made to each of us.

So, what are โ€œthe wiles of the devilโ€ (v. 11)? The Greek word is methodia: methods, schemes, plots, plans, etc. It implies someone who carefully studies another in order to determine the right method of attack or an animal studying its prey. Scripture tells us Satan is a โ€œroaring lion, seeking whom he may devourโ€ (1 Peter 5:8).

Satanโ€™s tactics vary, but he generally has two main lines of attack. One is an outward, frontal assault; the other is far more subtle from within.

One is persecution: a full-scale attack to intimidate and wear the believer down. The other is infiltration. If the outward assault through trials and temptations fails, he may seek to influence believers by using unbelievers in churches to distract or sway them.

Paul said that Satan transforms himself as an angel of light, so it’s no surprise that demons also disguise themselves as ministers of light (see 2 Corinthians 11:14-15). This is why we must test everything against Godโ€™s Word to discern whatโ€™s true (see Acts 17:11).

“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood” (Ephesians 6:12). Thereโ€™s something going on behind the scenes: principalities, powers, and rulers of the darkness of this age.

There is, however, good news, too. While the bad news is that a third of the angels fell with Satan, the good news is two-thirds did notโ€”which means Satanโ€™s forces are outnumbered. The faithful angels are on our side, serving as โ€œministering spirits sent forth to minister for those who will inherit salvationโ€ (Hebrews 1:14).

In 2 Kings 6, when the Syrians besieged the city, Elisha told his servant, โ€œDo not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with themโ€ (2 Kings 6:16-17). And the Lord opened the servantโ€™s eyes to see the angelic hosts surrounding them.

Perspective matters. Truth matters. Knowing your Bible matters.

And when fear begins to rise, our prayer should be, โ€œLord, open my eyes that I might see what’s really going on.โ€ For, โ€œIf God is for us, who can be against us?โ€ (Romans 8:31).

โ€œHe who is in you is greater than he who is in the worldโ€ (1 John 4:4).

Shifting Public Opinion: The Appeal Of Pride Month Appears To Be Fading

For years, June brought a predictable wave of corporate logos, advertising campaigns, themed merchandise, and public celebrations. Parents learned to pay closer attention to commercials in family programming, sports fans grew accustomed to Pride-themed uniforms and promotions, and many city streets became venues for often indecent displays at Pride parades. This year is noticeably different. The symbols are not gone, but they are far less prominent. Itโ€™s premature to say Pride has fallen, but it is fair to say the appeal of Pride Month has faded.

A Wake-Up Call: Report Finds That Australian Christians Are Opting For Silence Over Societal Pushback

Over the past few years, I have spoken with countless believers who feel increasingly hesitant to express their faith openly. Teachers are unsure what they can say in the classroom. Healthcare workers worry about the consequences of acting according to their conscience. Employees feel pressure to keep their beliefs private in the workplace. Parents are concerned about the values being promoted in schools and public institutions. Perhaps the most significant finding is not that Christians are facing challenges. Jesus told us to expect opposition. Rather, it is that many believers are quietly withdrawing from public life. They are self-censoring.

Jan Markell: Is Israel’s Spiritual Blindness A Reason For Christians To Reject Them?

Ezekiel 36 emphasizes that when the Jews return to the land, they will do so in unbelief. There will be spiritual regeneration much later! The dry bones of Ezekiel 37 reflect a lack of breath or spiritual life. God states he is gathering them back โ€œnot for your sake but for my holy nameโ€™s sake,โ€ because their presence among the nations caused his name to be profaned. Ezekiel 36 promises that once back in the land, God will cleanse them, give them a new spirit, and cause them to walk in his statutes. But much later.
