A UN envoy charged Thursday that foreign actors continue to meddle in Libya’s conflict, resupplying the parties to the conflict in violation of recent international commitments made during a summit in Berlin on January 12.
Speaking before the UN Security Council, chief of the UN support mission in Libya Ghassan Salame warned that “the maneuvers to resupply the two parties threaten to precipitate a new and much more dangerous conflagration.”
On the same day, the AFP agency cited a French military source as saying that France’s Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier this week spotted a Turkish frigate escorting a cargo ship delivering armored vehicles to the Libyan capital of Tripoli in a breach of a UN arms embargo.
The cargo ship Bana reportedly docked in Tripoli on Wednesday, a day after President Emmanuel Macron angered Ankara by accusing his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan of failing “to keep his word” to end meddling in the north African country.
France has been outspoken in its criticisms as Turkey moved to step up its involvement in the Libyan conflict, fast-tracking a bill to deploy troops in support of Libya’s UN-recognized Government of National Accord, which has been struggling to stand its ground against eastern-based strongman Khalifa Haftar.
