Many Western nations are careening down a path of radical progressivism, but no nation may be further down the track than America’s neighbor to the north.
As liberal policies are taking over Western nations, what makes Canada strikingly more radical is the lack of voices in politics willing to stand in opposition.
Conversion therapy
Conversion therapy bans are regularly referred to as a “Trojan horse” against religious freedom. Cloaked in tales of preventing shock therapy and abuse—actions which have long been illegal—these bans are passed, placing laws on the books which criminalize the outreach of the Gospel and defense of Biblical sexuality.
While many nations have passed conversion therapy bans, Canada was one of three countries to vote unanimously in its favor (alongside Iceland and Malta), and was the only country to pass the ban without a formal debate.
More startling, the Conservatives were the party that requested a rare “unanimous consent motion” to fast-track the ban, granting immediate approval and bypassing legislative debate only two days after the bill was introduced—no study of the text and no amendments.
Not a single MP took issue that God’s design of sexuality was referred to in the legislation text as a “myth.” Nor did they even venture to examine the threat posed to religious liberty, which was questioned by virtually every other nation to consider such a ban.
The dangerous repercussions to religious freedom were viewed as so consequential in nations like the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and others that it proved to be insurmountable in multiple attempts to approve a federal ban.
Canadian MPs made no attempt—in any capacity—to scrutinize the risk to religious liberty as they passed a law to effectively criminalize the teaching of Biblical sexuality across the nation. Canada stood alone in this oversight, with MPs literally crossing the floor to embrace one another in the House of Commons, proudly applauding each other’s negligence to protect the freedoms of Christians.
Euthanasia
How does a nation respond to the most vulnerable of its citizenry? Canada’s answer has been to pressure them into ending their lives.
Since its legalization 10 years ago, over 100,000 lives have been ended in Canada through euthanasia, with it becoming one of the leading causes of death and its yearly number surpassing all other countries combined.
Euthanasia in Canada is so radical that it has become a global cautionary tale, with many countries using it as a case study against legalizing or expanding the practice in their own nations.
The door was first opened to assisted suicide in Canada after a 2015 ruling by the nation’s Supreme Court (another unanimous decision), before being legalized for the terminally ill in 2016 and expanded to the non-terminally ill in 2021.
The horror stories of euthanasia in Canada are too numerous to list. An incalculable number of individuals have been pressured by health officials, including being led to believe that they are a burden on society and their families, and a considerable number of instances have been reported where the individual did not adequately consent to be euthanized.
Despite being used as an alarming wake-up call to those considering the laws in other nations, Canada continues to ignore these frequent occurrences and disturbing death toll, opting to pursue euthanasia’s further expansion—particularly to the “mentally ill.”
Abortion
Canada has also thrown in the towel on the sanctity of life, with even the Conservative Party treating abortion as a “settled issue” unworthy of further debate. In 2023, the Party released a declaration vowing that, should they be elected, “A Conservative Government will not support any legislation to regulate abortion.” The Canadian government proudly states that “abortion is one of the most commonly performed medical procedures in the country,” adding that “roughly 1 in 3 women in Canada will have an abortion during their lifetime.”
France and Sweden are the only other countries to have no major political parties willing to oppose abortion; however, both nations enforce limits between 14 and 18 weeks gestation. In Canada, there is no gestational limit, no requirement of consent from the father or a parent, and entirely tax-funded.
More Startling Developments
If the two examples above were not enough, Canada passed the “Online News Act” in 2023, which resulted in Canadians being blocked from viewing news reports from outside the country on Meta platforms. This, coupled with the Liberal government’s suppression of Conservative news groups within the country, should set off alarm bells, harkening back to regimes throughout history that sought to control the information accessible to their citizenry. Today, Canada is the only nation in a total and permanent “blackout” from foreign news sources through Meta.
Of all the Western nations, Canada stands out in the worst possible way. Within the last decade, the nation has startled the world by arresting pastors, freezing bank accounts of dissenting voices, suppressing press freedom, killing its most vulnerable, and taking direct aim at religious liberty. Even members of the highly progressive European Union have pushed back against what they view as a “dictatorship” steadily emerging in the country.
Despite the astonishing state of affairs in Canada, it is even more shocking to hear the views of many average Canadians, who routinely express delight that their politics are not as “messy” as those in the United States. By making this claim, they fail to recognize that the so-called “messiness” stems from having individuals willing to push back and defend their freedoms and morality—something which is present in varying degrees in all other Western nations.
When all of your politicians are careening down the same treacherous path, there is no stopping the train.
