A controversial Canadian bill that would criminalize offering help to those wanting to overcome unwanted same-sex attraction or gender confusion passed its second reading yesterday in the House of Commons with Conservative Party support.
Last Thursday, Members of Parliament (MPs) voted 306-7 in favor of a motion giving their approval in principle to Bill C-6, โAn Act to amend the Criminal Code (conversion therapy).โย The bill, which has been called a โdisgracefulโ attack on parental freedoms by family groups, was introduced by Justice Minister David Lametti on October 1.
Bill C-6 passed with the near-full support of the [so-called] “Conservative Party” MPs, with virtually all Liberal, New Democrat, Green, Bloc Quebecois, along with independent MPs voted in support of C-6 as well.
Voting against the bill was only a handful of Conservative Party of Canada (CPC) MPโs, those being Derek Sloan, Jeremy Patzer, Arnold Viersen, Bob Zimmer, Ted Falk, Tom Kmiec, and Damien Kurek.
Jack Fonseca, Political Operations Director for Campaign Life Coalition (CLC), blasted CPC MPs who voted in favor of the bill, calling it a โhuge betrayal.โ
โThis was a huge betrayal of the socially conservative movement by every single one of the MPs who gave their assent to criminalizing parents, pastors, priests, and licensed professionals. Shame on them,โ Fonseca told LifeSiteNews.
โWhat I wasnโt prepared for was to see all but seven Conservatives MPs vote in favor of criminalizing all public expression of biblical teaching on homosexuality, which is the true motive of Bill C-6.โ
The controversial Bill C-6 will now head to the House of Commons Justice committee for review.
Bill C-6 is identical to Bill C-8, which was dropped, along with all other bills, when Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau prorogued Parliament in August.
During debate of the bill Monday, Sloan raised concerns that it could even go as far as to potentially outlaw praying for homosexuals as a therapy attempt. In the past, Sloan remarked that Trudeauโs bill would legislate โchild abuse.โ
Many CPC MPs known as social conservatives voted yes to send the bill to the Justice Committee, including Cathay Wagantall and Nellie Shin.
Wagantall said she voted for the bill despite her misgivings in the hopes a committee would fix the โflawsโ of the bill.
“With the best of faith, I vote in favour of sending this flawed bill to committee,” said Wagantall as she registered her virtual vote.
Notably, former CPC leader Andrew Scheer skipped the vote along with a handful of other CPC MPs.
Current CPC leader Erin OโToole, who supports the bill, voted in favor of Bill C-6 but allowed his MPโs a free vote on the bill.
Two CPC MPs abstained from the vote, Tamara Jansen and Dane Lloyd.
Fonseca offered praise to the CPC MPs who voted against Bill C-6, noting that they all have a green-light rating from CLC, meaning they have solid pro-life and pro-family views.
โCongratulations to MP Derek Sloan, MP Arnold Viersen and the other five who voted with integrity and honor against this unconstitutional, fascistic legislation,โ Fonseca told LifeSiteNews.
โBut what on earth happened to the other Conservatives-in-name-only, including the many pro-life MPs who just gave their stamp of approval to a law that will result in mass child abuse?โ
According to the American Psychiatric Associationโs Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, up to 98 percent of boys and 88 percent of girls resolve feelings of gender dysphoria and accept their biological sex after naturally going through puberty.
Bill C-6 defines โconversion therapyโ as any โpractice, treatment or service designed to change a personโs sexual orientation to heterosexual or gender identity to cisgender, or to repress or reduce non-heterosexual attraction or sexual behaviour.โ
In total, Bill C-6 adds five offenses to the Criminal Code. If the bill becomes law would make it a crime punishable by up to five years for three offenses: causing a minor under age 18 to undergo conversion therapy; removing a minor from Canada to undergo conversion therapy abroad; causing a person to undergo conversion therapy against his will.
It will also make it a crime punishable for up to two years in jail for those found guilty of profiting from providing conversion therapy and advertising an offer to provide conversion therapy.
Trudeau has been a champion for Bill C-6, saying about it during a recent debate on the bill this week, “Our legislation will criminalize efforts to force someone to change or hide who they are. While Conservatives couch their support for conversion therapy behind misleading arguments, on this side, we will always stand up for the rights of Canadians.”
Weeks ago, Lametti told reporters that the Liberal party in pushing forward Bill C-6 would not โcriminalize conversations where personal points of view on sexual orientation or gender identity are expressed.โ
He also said that his party has not made it illegal for Canadians to be able to have their own opinions on homosexuality or transgenderism.
Gwen Landolt of REAL Women told LifeSiteNews in early October that Bill C-6 is โdisgracefulโ and a โwickedโ piece of legislation, after it was introduced in parliament.
Despite being disappointed by the way the CPC party members voted for Bill C-6, Fonseca said that there is still hope and the โfight is not over.โ
โThe good news is that this fight is not over, it’s just beginning. We can still educate Members of Parliament in all parties about the unconstitutionality of Bill C-6, the danger it presents to thousands of Canadian children who could now be pushed to chemically and surgically mutilate themselves without any voice of sober second thought to give them pause, and the enormous persecution it will bring upon the heads of believers in Jesus Christ, both laity and clergy, who dare express support for biblical teaching on human sexuality,โ Fonseca told LifeSiteNews.
CLC created a website called https://stoptheban.ca/, to โfightโ the โconversion therapy banโ which features ex-homosexuals and ex-transgendered people who oppose Bill C-6.
Fonseca noted their site came โjust in time for the next major battle to persuade the Justice Committee to reject Bill C-6.โ
โOur new tool (stoptheban.ca) has powerful testimonials from ex-gays and ex-transgenders which make it obvious to anybody with an open mind why banning โconversion therapyโ is unjust, and cannot be allowed to happen,โ Fonseca told LifeSiteNews.
In addition to CLC, the group Parents as First Educators (PAFE) also created a petition to โStop Justin Trudeau from encroaching on parental rights and limiting therapy options!โ
In an email sent to followers this morning, PAFE said that it is of โof URGENT importanceโ to contact your MP, especially if they voted for Bill C-6 because the bill โcan criminalize parents who try to help their children who are questioning their gender.โ
PAFE has provided talking points one can use when contacting their local MP. For M.P. contact information, check CLCโs website here, or use its Action Alert Email campaign to send your M.P. a message.
HD Editors Note: Why Is This News Biblically Relevant?
Ken Ham in his article, “Silencing the Christian Church: Canadian Politicians Introduce Bill to Criminalize โConversionโ Therapy” explained how this dangerous bill targets Christians:
Lifesite News reported on the bill and wrote that pro-family advocates are denouncing the bill as a totalitarian law that will prevent Canadian youth from getting the therapy they want and need. The fear is that clinical therapy or spiritual counseling to help a person overcome any gender identity confusion, same-sex attraction, and to accept their bodily reality and birth gender will be defined as โconversion therapyโ and, thus, become illegal.
The ban and criminalization of โadvertising an offerโ to provide conversion therapy is potentially one of the ones most targeting Christian churches and pastors. According to the language in Bill C-8, advertising means โany materialโincluding a photographic, film, video, audio or other recordings, made by any means, visual representation or any written materialโthat is used for advertising an offer to provide conversion therapy . . . .โ So, if your church wanted to put a flyer in its bulletin mentioning a guest speaker who (as an example) was formerly homosexual but has now left that lifestyle, it could be considered โadvertisingโ conversion therapy. And if you collect a love offering for that speaker, would that be considered โa financial or other material benefit from the provision of conversion therapyโ? According to the broad definition of the billโyes!
Even more disturbing is what the bill lumps in with conversion therapy. According to the Order of Forfeiture section of the bill:
If the court is satisfied, on a balance of probabilities, that the publication, representation, written material or recording referred to in subsection (1) is obscene, child pornography, a voyeuristic recording, an intimate image, an advertisement of sexual services or an advertisement for conversion therapy, it may make an order declaring the matter forfeited to Her Majesty in right of the province in which the proceedings take place, for disposal as the Attorney General may direct.
Thatโs right: Canadian politicians are now trying to equate the counseling actions of sincere pastors, youth workers, and pro-family advocates with child pornographers and voyeurs. Furthermore, the bill defines conversion therapy as โa practice, treatment or service designed to change a personโs sexual orientation to heterosexual or gender identity to cisgender, or to repress or reduce non-heterosexual attraction or sexual behavior.โ But what about the other way around? Think about it. Does the bill provide protection against being indoctrinated and influenced into gender questioning and change? Well, of course not! The bill goes on to say: โFor greater certainty, this definition does not include a practice, treatment or service that relates (a) to a personโs gender transition; or (b) to a personโs exploration of their identity or to its development.โ
Dr. Ann Gillies, an Ontario psychotherapist, had this to say in her interview with Lifesite News. โThe ultimate goal is to silence the Christian church in Canada. It is to silence us from talking. Itโs totally totalitarian, itโs about banning . . . the central ministry of the church, which is conversion . . . And itโs about banning the ministry to the brokenhearted.โ Yes! Thatโs what it is all aboutโitโs the spiritual war raging around us. This bill could be used to ban the Bible! Thatโs not overreacting, either.
Her analysis is dead on. This is nothing more than an LGBTQ-driven agenda to silence the church and enforce their anti-God sexual humanism and atheism. The last point Dr. Gillies made is especially poignant. This bill makes no allowance for someone who wants to be counseled and is having doubts about their homosexuality or transgender lifestyle. To even counsel someone to โreduceโ such a lifestyle would be a criminal offense under this bill. And the penalties range from 2โ5 years in prison and/or stiff fines. Oh, and if you have a copy of that church flyer mentioning the โformerly homosexualโ guest speaker on your computer, they can confiscate that, too.
When I see these types of news items, I canโt help but think of Godโs warnings in Isaiah.
Isaiah 5:20-21 KJV โ โWoe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter! Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight!โ
We can and should pray for the godly politicians, lawmakers, and citizens of Canada who stand firm on Godโs Word, that will not cave to the spirit of โanything goesโ gender and sexuality as they oppose this heinous bill.
