The entirety of the U.S. Senate Democratic Caucus has requested that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) turn a blind eye when it comes to its investigation of drinking water polluted with abortion drug contaminants.
In a Thursday letter to EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin spearheaded by Senator Patty Murray (D-Wash.), the group of lawmakers claim that the investigation “is a stark departure from past EPA practice and serves to further this administration’s attacks on reproductive health care,” and “distracts” from the organization’s “critical role protecting Americans from known chemical pollutants in our water systems.”
In July 2026, Students for Life of America published a peer reviewed study confirming remnants of the abortion drugs are found in drinking water. “Past research has shown that steroid hormones and other endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs) are present in environmental water, with implications for human and wildlife health. Abortion providers have shifted a large part of their practice to medication-induced abortion, using the anti-progesterone synthetic steroid hormone mifepristone,” the study noted.
It continued, “Water samples were collected from sites upstream and downstream of water treatment facilities, and from municipal tap water, from each of 3 American cities. There were significant levels of mifepristone (up to 0.041 ?gram/l) in the water of all but one of the nine sampling classes. Because of the plethora of effects of progesterone, this contaminant could affect the physiology of aquatic animals; and human health, including fertility, pregnancy and fetal development. The findings indicate the necessity for significant additional investigation into the levels of various hormones and EDCs, including mifepristone, in water sources.”
Last month, the EPA launched a study to “strengthen the nation’s understanding of potential pollutants in drinking water.” Zeldin said in a press release, “We have heard loud and clear that Americans are concerned about potential unknown pollutants lurking in their drinking water. The Trump EPA is committed to getting to the bottom of this, so that Americans can feel confident about the safety of their drinking water. EPA’s state-of-the-art study will shed light on this issue and complement the actions we are already taking under the Safe Drinking Water Act. What we learn will provide clarity and peace of mind while guiding the agency’s continued efforts to Make America Healthy Again.”
Despite their access to the data, Democratic legislators believe mifepristone contamination in drinking water does not exist. “While there is no scientific evidence that would support mifepristone and misoprostol as candidates for surveillance by the EPA, there has been a targeted political pressure campaign by anti-abortion activists to urge the agency to use the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) and other environmental authorities to surveil and regulate medication abortion drugs,” the Democratic Caucus claimed.
“It is deeply alarming that this kind of radical, anti-science campaign might have an audience at the EPA,” the senators wrote. “This study is a departure from the EPA’s historic role in protecting our water and air from actual threats to human health and the environment.”
Joy Stockbauer, a policy analyst for Family Research Council’s Center for Human Dignity, told The Washington Stand that these legislators have lost sight of what really matters. “It appears the Democratic Caucus have forsaken truth for the sake of staying in the good graces of the abortion industry. Their constituents would do well to take notice that the safety, health, and wellbeing of their families will always be secondary in these legislators’ minds. Their priority will always be to appease abortion businesses and keep the Planned Parenthood campaign donations flowing.”
Students for Life of America President Kristan Hawkins posted on X that mifepristone poses a threat beyond expectant mothers: “Peer-reviewed research has detected mifepristone & mifepristone equivalents in our waterways, raising serious concerns about the potential risks these drugs pose to human health, wildlife, our environment, and even endangered species,” she observed. “Chemical abortion pills already end the lives of preborn babies & carry serious risks for mothers. Now we’re demanding answers about what happens when these drugs enter our water.”
“You’d think the party that constantly lectures Americans about protecting the planet would welcome more testing, but apparently, when it comes to the Left’s obsession with ending the lives of preborn children, even clean water becomes a partisan issue,” Hawkins added. “Just because the Democrats don’t care about Americans being micro-dosed by an endocrine disruptor doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t find out how bad it is.”
