You have probably had someone say it to you: “Don’t fly off the handle! You’ll regret it later.” Isn’t that the truth?
In Proverbs 14:17, God says that “a quick-tempered person acts foolishly…” When you and I react with an emotional response rather than one that is intentional, godly, and thoughtful, we are going to end up acting foolishly.
The last part of this verse says, “person of evil devices is hated.” When you and I are quick-tempered, we do foolish things. When we do foolish things, it will only lead to hatred.
Think about how being quick to erupt in anger can destroy relationships with our siblings, spouse, neighbors, or friends. One of the great disciplines of the spiritual life is you and I being controlled by the Spirit of God. Galatians 5:22-23 tells us that the “fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.” In contrast, the work of the flesh is quick-tempered. The work of the flesh is angry. The work of the flesh is quick to do foolish thingsโand it will only create more tension in all of those relationships.
Hear the word of God: don’t fly off the handle!
God, I just pray as we go through the journeys of this life, and all the frustrations that we face, that You would help us to be under the control of the Spirit, rather than the flesh. God, it will be evident to all, and it will lead either to a greater sense of affection and love for one another or contempt and hate. God, give us grace, give us strength, give us clarity. God, help us to be people of peace, wisdom, grace, courage, and clarity. We pray it in Jesus’ name. Amen.
Friends, hold on to Jesus. Hold on to His promise. Hold on to His presence. He is going to carry you through.
