Psalm 27:14 KJV – “Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord.”
Waiting is one of the irritations of modern life. Why do I have to wait in line? Why must I wait to be seated? And why, in the twenty-first century, am I still asked to hold? What good can come out of waiting? Answer: patience.
Patience doesn’t come naturally. It almost seems that we are preprogrammed for instant activity and answers. What impatient, impulsive people we are, yet patience comes through the discipline of waiting—a virtue few of us have developed. One of the definitions of wait is to trust fully. Learning to wait patiently exercises our faith in our God to accomplish His perfect will when and how He wants it.
Waiting for something we desire or need often feels like an unnecessary waste of time, but the opposite is true. When I wait upon the Lord, He can, in a timelier manner, bring me to the thing I am so eager for.
When the Bible says, “Wait on the Lord,” know that this is the time to learn the best and quickest route to the desired destination. I can and will do much better if I discipline myself to trust in His timing, for He is never late in giving us any good thing.
The next time you hear, “Wait,” “Be patient,” or “There will be a slight delay,” remember that it is time to trust the Lord—confident that He is strengthening your faith in the interval. He knows all the details, exactly what’s needed, and when and how to make it happen.
