The headlines are saying that a new discovery shows evidence of life on Mars. But what did they really find? Well, not quite what the headlines might make you think!
Spoiler: it wasn’t life! And it’s a great example of the importance of reading past the headline. These sensational headlines are often very misleading, exaggerating what was really discovered by taking scientific claims and making a giant leap.
What NASA scientists really found was, well, rocks with spots on them! They think this might be evidence that there was life on our nearest planetary neighbor “billions” of years ago . . . and from that possibility, they infer that maybe life started there and ended up here and thus we’re all descendants of Martians! (It’s not just headlines making giant leaps from the evidence!)
Next time you see a headline that contradicts what we’d expect starting with God’s Word, read past the headline! You’ll probably find the actual research was much more tentative than the headline suggests or that it was just filled with evolutionary interpretation.
