Christian Publishers In China Endure Harsh Conditions In Prison

Chang Yuchun and his wife, Li Chenhui, remain in brutal conditions in separate prisons in Xi’an City, Shaanxi province, China.

The couple was involved in printing Christian literature and materials in Xi’an in 2015. In July 2020, their company was raided and closed. State security police seized more than 210,000 Christian books.

That same month, Chang Yuchun and Li Chenhui were detained and arrested. They were sentenced in 2021 for illegally printing materials without the proper licenses.

In prison, they have endured torture, starvation, and other harsh treatment from the prison guards and other prisoners. Their health has deteriorated rapidly, according to their son. Chang Yuchun has now developed a serious spinal condition and is struggling to eat, while Li Chenhui is facing major headaches, dizziness, and ongoing abuse from guards.

I Remember When Americans Didn’t Have To Debate Whether Socialism Worked—We Watched People Escape From It

In 1989, when the Berlin Wall fell, I was working with the U.S. Department of State managing one of its Anti-Terrorism Assistance Program sites. Within months of the fall of the wall, we began training police officers and other security officials in the United States from former Eastern Bloc countries. I vividly recall greeting one of the groups and taking them to the grocery store on the way to the dormitories where they would be staying. Thirty-seven years ago, people who had lived under socialism came to America and wept when they saw an ordinary grocery store. Today, a generation with no memory of the repression behind the Iron Curtain increasingly votes for candidates promising socialism.
