A middle school in Oregon is facing backlash after failing to inform parents of “Pride Spirit Week” activities in advance, which included instructing students to come to class dressed in “drag.”
Each day of “Pride Spirit Week” at the Arts & Technology Academy in the Eugene School District reportedly had a different LGBT dress-up theme. Students were told to come to school dressed in different LGBT flag colors, as their favorite “queer hero,” and even in all black “in remembrance of lost members of the LGBTQIA+ community.”
On Wednesday, the middle school children were instructed to cross-dress for “Drag Day,” attending class as a “drag queen/king/monarch” or simply as a “different gender” from their own.
Parents were notified late Monday of “Pride Spirit Week” after their children had already begun participating in the activities and the school day had concluded. According to Fox News, the activities included classroom lessons on “the history of the LGBTQ+ civil rights movement.”
The law in Oregon requires that schools “notify parents and guardians ahead of instruction on human sexuality,” Fox News noted. In response, the school apologized for the late notification while simultaneously defending its actions, strangely insisting that the lessons did not fall under the banner of “instruction on human sexuality.”
Numerous schools have come under scrutiny and lawsuits in recent years for deliberately keeping parents in the dark about lessons praising and encouraging children to adopt homosexual and transgender lifestyles. This has especially been the case with children of Christian parents, who the schools have labeled “intolerant,” claiming that the safety of students may be jeopardized by parental notification.
The Bible commands against defying God’s perfect design by dressing as the opposite gender. Deuteronomy 22:5 states that a “woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman’s garment: for all that do so are abomination unto the Lord thy God.” The same is the case with homosexuality, which, in both the Old and New Testaments, is condemned as going against God’s moral standards for sexuality (Leviticus 18:22, Jude 1:7, Romans 1:26-32, Genesis 2:24). God’s Word also addresses the seriousness of leading children into sin (Matthew 18:6).
As the national spotlight continues to expose inappropriate, sexually explicit, and anti-Christian content in schools, many parents have opted to remove their children entirely from public education. In 2023, homeschooling became the fastest-growing form of education. According to Pew Research, that same year, 75% of American homeschooling parents stated that wanting to provide their own “moral instruction” to their children was a key reason for stepping away from government schools.
