Yet another battle front in the totalitarian assault against home education and parental rights appears to be opening, this time in Australia. While parents across the nation and worldwide flee government schools by the millions, bureaucrats are working overtime to slam the door shut on one of the last bastions of educational liberty: homeschooling.
The latest attack came just last week, when a high-ranking official in far-left Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s Labor government openly attacked homeschooling and religious schools as potential threats to “deeper social cohesion.” The remarks appear to be a trial balloon for future policies undermining home education and faith-based schools.
In a controversial speech to a leftwing “think tank,” Australia’s Assistant Minister for “International Education” Julian Hill highlighted the rapid growth of religious education and home education. But rather than celebrating the trend, he argued that it was preventing Australian children from mixing with peers from different backgrounds.
“Education could be among the institutions that militate against intercultural connections and deeper social cohesion,” Hill declared, questioning whether the children are being properly exposed to “broader society” and what exactly is being taught in their homes and religious academies.
In particular, Hill, who also serves as assistant minister for citizenship, customs and multicultural affairs, warned about supposedly “quite extreme or conservative curricula being used.” If the trends continue, this “gives cause for pause and reflection,” he said, without specifying what curricula he objected to or why he did not approve.
“What is being taught to these kids?” Hill continued. “Are they mixing with broader society?”
Hill’s rhetorical attacks on home education, parental rights, religious liberty, and other fundamental freedoms are not happening in isolation. Instead, they are just the latest salvo in what is quickly becoming a global war against those who seek alternatives to government education.
Indeed, last year, the United Nations Educational, Cultural, and Scientific Organization (UNESCO) openly called on governments to urgently crack down on home education. To comply with supposed “international human rights law,” all governments have an obligation to bring homeschooling and religious options under state control, the UN said.
Hill, a top Labor politician down under, pointed to numbers that he considers alarming in Australia. Statistics show parents across the former prison colony are increasingly seeking to reclaim their God-given authority from the state over their children’s education and upbringing.
Since 2015, Australia has seen 320 independent (mostly religious) schools open, compared to just 279 new government schools. Last year, fully 33.9 percent of Australian students — 1.4 million children — attended religiously affiliated schools. Of course, in Australia, government largely funds (and controls) “religious” schools, too.
Meanwhile, homeschooling registrations have skyrocketed over the last five years. Data cited by Hill show an increase of 232 percent in Queensland, 116 percent in New South Wales, and 85 percent in Victoria. That massive surge coincides with COVID tyranny — especially draconian in Australia — exposing the reality of the government school system.
Hill, a graduate of a religious school himself, insists he’s not necessarily opposed to faith-based education. Rather, he just wants to make sure there is more government-orchestrated “mixing” through sports, extracurricular activities, and social events—modeled on Singapore’s top-down social engineering.
In other words, parents cannot be trusted to raise their own children and associate with who they want. This is especially in the new and improved “multicultural” Australia, engineered in recent years through borders opened wide by political elites. In Hill’s view, the state must step in to ensure proper “bridging capital,” reduced “prejudice,” and resilience against “hate-based violence and misinformation,” Hill argued.
This is the same tired rhetoric used by collectivists and tyrants always and everywhere: your children belong to the village, not the family, and it is for their own good.
Ironically, a 2014 study by Albert Cheng cited by the U.S.-based National Home Education Research Institute shows Hill is wrong. In fact, the researchers found that adults who were homeschooled were actually more tolerant of different people than those who attended government schools.
The latest development in the emerging global war on homeschooling cannot be dismissed as some rogue backbencher’s rant. Hill speaks as what is called a “frontbencher” in the Albanese government — a key official — amid a royal commission on antisemitism and social cohesion triggered by the horrific Bondi terror attack.
The message is clear: independent education threatens the multicultural utopia these globalists demand. If children aren’t marinated daily in state-approved diversity, equity, and inclusion dogma, society might fracture. Better to force conformity at gunpoint than allow parents to instill traditional values, biblical truth, or national heritage.
This Australian assault fits perfectly into a broader, sinister international pattern that threatens parental rights and fundamental freedoms on every continent. As this writer has reported extensively at The New American, The Newman Report, and elsewhere, the UN — long a hotbed of communist influence — is leading the charge from the top down.
Last year, this writer dissected the UNESCO report “Homeschooling through a Human Rights Lens,” overseen by Gwang-Chol Chang, a former official from the communist dictatorship of North Korea. This draconian document places a giant target on the backs of homeschoolers worldwide.
Among other outrages, it demands that governments implement mandatory registration, periodic evaluations, home visits, and alignment of all home education with UN goals under the Convention on the Rights of the Child. That includes forced exposure to “global citizenship,” “comprehensive sexuality education,” “gender equality,” erasing traditional roles, and more.
The report dismisses overwhelming evidence that homeschooled children outperform their government-schooled peers academically, socially, and emotionally. Instead, it insists governments are the “primary duty-bearers” for education and must crush any “problematic agendas” in curricula or online materials.
Over the long term, parents and even private schools that refuse to comply with the UN’s outrageous demands will be accused of violating the “human rights” of children. This is the same UNESCO that pushes one-world indoctrination, and the same globalist machine that views parental authority as an obstacle to its utopian vision.
Across Europe, multiple governments have already banned homeschooling. Following in the footsteps of National Socialist leader Adolf Hitler, the first tyrant to criminalize home education, authorities in Sweden and France have pursued similar policies. From the United Kingdom to Portugal, other regimes are flirting with the idea, too.
In many of those countries, just as this writer warned would happen as the borders were opened wide to the Third World and mass Islamic immigration, governments are pointing to Muslim extremism as the pretext for cracking down on education. But the solution to the problem created by the government is not to undermine parental rights.
The assault now surfacing in Australia and moving through Europe is already appearing in the United States, too. Democrat lawmakers in multiple blue states are mirroring these tactics with chilling precision. As documented in a May 2025 article for The Newman Report, legislators nationwide are exploiting rare tragedies to justify draconian controls.
Minnesota, Connecticut, New Jersey, Illinois, and other states have all proposed extreme attacks on homeschooling in recent years. These range from mandated government curricula and restrictions on when or how parents can teach their children, to mandatory visits by government.
Meanwhile, a growing push by well-funded activists and establishment media outlets is seeking to have government implement radical restrictions. One of the leaders of the movement, Harvard Law Professor Elizabeth Bartholet, has called for a “presumptive ban” on home education to “protect” children from their parents. Ironically, the university is currently under fire for receiving almost $10 million from convicted child sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein.
The pattern is unmistakable: whether in Canberra, Brussels, Washington, or at UNESCO headquarters in Paris, the globalist left views homeschooling and religious education as existential threats. Parents who reject the LGBT indoctrination, critical race theory, climate hysteria, and anti-Christian worldview of government schools are “extremists” who must be reined in for the “greater good” of social cohesion.
But true social cohesion comes not from forced mixing and state propaganda, but from strong families rooted in truth, faith, and liberty. Homeschooled children are not isolated bigots—they are among the most tolerant, successful, and patriotic young people in the Western world, as mountains of peer-reviewed data confirm. The real danger to society is a generation raised in godless, failing public schools that produce ignorance, division, and dependency.
The Albanese government’s rhetoric, the UNESCO blueprint, the Democrat power grabs, and the European precedents all point to the same endgame: total state control over education to engineer compliant global citizens. Parental rights—rooted in the Bible and enshrined in the U.S. Constitution and natural law—are under siege like never before.
Parents everywhere must recognize this for what it is: a coordinated war on the family. The solution is not compromise or “school choice” traps that invite regulation. It is bold resistance—defending homeschool freedoms, supporting independent Christian education, and rejecting every scheme that places bureaucrats between parents and their children.
The future of Western civilization hangs in the balance. If parents surrender their God-given right and duty to educate the next generation, they surrender everything. The time to stand is now — before the globalist noose tightens further around the necks of free peoples everywhere.
