Why Does Our Civilization Choose The Servitude Of Communism Instead Of Liberty?

Hal Lindsey

During the US presidential campaign of 1960, John Kennedy would sometimes end his speeches with a particularly moving Abraham Lincoln quote. In Towson, Maryland, September 16th, Kennedy presented it like this. โ€œDuring the campaign of 1860, Lincoln wrote to a friend, โ€˜I know there is a God and that He hates injustice. I see the storm coming and I know His hand is in it. If He has a place and a part for me, I believe that I am ready.โ€™โ€ Kennedy continued, โ€œNow, 100 years later, we know there is a God and that He hates injustice, and we see the storm coming. But if He has a place and a part for us, I believe we are ready.โ€

He used the quote again in Cleveland a few days later. This time after presenting the Lincoln quote, he made his point even more clear. โ€œNow, 100 years laterโ€ฆ the issue is not whether this Nation will exist half slave or half free, but whether the world will.โ€

In those red-hot days of cold war, the slavery of communism encroached on more and more of the world. The liberal Democrat from Massachusetts made its defeat central to his presidential campaign. Like his Republican friend and political opponent, Richard Nixon, Kennedy had a long history of working against communism.

You can take a cynical point of view and say, โ€œIn those days, it was just good politics to fight the commies.โ€ Maybe so. But why then and not now? What changed? Why is communism with its godless rule of an elite few, taught unabashedly on American campuses? Why do the most capitalistic organizations on earth โ€” American corporations โ€” give obeyance as well as millions of dollars to organizations run by avowed Marxists?

Why does our civilization careen toward servitude instead of liberty? Most thought communism was defeated with the fall of the Soviet Union. But today, it and other totalitarian ideologies are growing everywhere, especially in the United States. The answer boils down to a principle expressed in Proverbs 14:34. โ€œRighteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.โ€

When explaining the Constitutionโ€™s limits in keeping people free, John Adams said, โ€œWe have no government, armed with power, capable of contending with human passions, unbridled by morality and religion. Avarice, ambition, revenge and licentiousness would break the strongest cords of our Constitution, as a whale goes through a net.โ€

Morality forms the basis of our freedom. A nation that rejects God and His Word, also rejects the dividends of virtue โ€” one of which is liberty. Psalms 119:45 in the New Living Translation says, โ€œI will walk in freedom, for I have devoted myself to your commandments.โ€ 2 Corinthians 3:17 says, โ€œWhere the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.โ€

Inner bondage to sin destroys societal freedoms. But โ€œthe liberty wherewith Christ hath made us freeโ€ (Galatians 5:1) also extends outward โ€” from individuals to the whole society. It brings with it the fruit of human liberty and human rights.

In his Gettysburg Address, Lincoln spoke of being highly resolved that โ€œthis nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom.โ€ The key words here are, โ€œunder God.โ€ May we who know God highly resolve once again to spread His Word. Over time, the freedom He brings to individuals adds rights and freedoms to entire nations.

Christian Parents In Europe Seek Help From Washington After Swedish Gov’t Seizes Their Children, Calls Church Attendance ‘Religious Extremism’

The child protection services called the couple โ€œreligious extremists,โ€ citing the familyโ€™s church attendance, which was three times a week, and their refusal to allow the girls to wear make-up. The Samsons fought for custody of their children 14 times in court. They said prosecuting attorneys cited their lack of a television in the home and their reading of Bible stories as โ€œviolentโ€ and grounds for the religious extremist accusations. The case reached the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR), which ruled on March 10 that the case was โ€œinadmissible,โ€ a final decision that cannot be appealed.

Greg Laurie: The Best Evangelism Lessons Billy Graham Taught Me

As I wrote illustrations for Billy Grahamโ€™s sermons, I naturally spent a lot of time with him. I traveled with him, asked him many questions, and analyzed everything he did as he preached. I watched him pray. I watched him deliver altar calls. I watched him as he went onto stage. I was there for it all. And as Billy was coming to the end of his crusade ministry, I was just at the beginning of mine. Hereโ€™s what he taught me about evangelism.

Called Out From The Culture: The Hope For America Is The Church

I believe that the hope for America is the churchโ€”God working through his church. Christians need to live up to their name. As Christ followers, we need to be Christlike. And if the church would be what it was meant to be, then it would change our nation. But letโ€™s localize it. If your church would be what it ought to be, it could change your city. It could change your county, and it could change your state. Letโ€™s localize it even more. If you would be what you ought to be as a follower of Jesus Christ and as a part of the church, then what a difference it could make in your church.
