The Breakdown Of The Family Is Not Merely A Social Trend—It’s A Sign Of The Times

David Bowen

In the closing chapters of Ecclesiastes, Solomon offers a curious yet profound command: “Cast your bread upon the waters, for you will find it after many days.” (Ecclesiastes 11:1)

Far from a lesson in commerce or maritime trade, this passage encourages men and women of faith to live lives of generosity, kindness, and trust in God’s providence. The writer of Ecclesiastes reveals the vanity of earthly pursuits and redirects the reader’s attention to eternal values—reminding us that acts of goodness, done in faith, become part of who we are, not just what we do.

While some interpret this verse through the lens of 1 Kings 10:22, which records Solomon’s fleet bringing treasures from distant lands, the true meaning of Ecclesiastes 11:1 transcends profit or trade. It is not about earthly returns but divine timing. The “bread” we cast upon the waters—our faith, mercy, and obedience—will return in God’s appointed season.

A Divided Church in a Confused Age

Yet today, as in Solomon’s time, the faithful are torn between worldly reasoning and divine truth. A recent survey from the Family Research Council reveals a startling reality: less than half of regular churchgoers can coherently define what a family is. Only 46% affirm the biblical definition of family as “husband + wife + children (and kin).”

If fewer than half of professing believers can identify the God-ordained structure of the home, how can the Church stand against the moral storms of the last days? To be pro-family and pro-life are not political stances—they are foundational biblical convictions rooted in the very nature and image of God.

Even more concerning, the survey found that 73% of churchgoers hold contradictory views on abortion. In many pulpits, the sanctity of life has become negotiable, and clarity has been replaced with confusion. Conferences like the unbiblical Revoice movement even suggest that being “pro-life” requires affirming trans ideology. Such reasoning is not compassion; it is compromise.

When the State Redefines the Family

The moral decay is not confined to church pews. In September, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed AB 495, a bill allowing any adult to sign an affidavit claiming to be a child’s relative, granting them authority to make educational and medical decisions. The law requires no background check, fingerprinting, or parental consent.

While the governor claimed this law “protects parents’ rights and keeps children safe,” it does the opposite. It undermines parental authority and opens the door to state interference, deception, and abuse. This erosion of the biblical family mirrors the prophetic warning of Isaiah 5:20:

“Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness.”

Prophetic Signs of Family Breakdown

Students of Bible prophecy recognize that these developments were foretold. In 2 Timothy 3:1–5, Paul warned that in the last days, people would be “lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents… without love.”

This passage outlines a spiritual sickness that begins in the home:

• Children rejecting parental authority
• Parents losing moral influence
• Families growing cold and divided

Jesus Himself confirmed this trajectory. In Matthew 10:21, He foretold betrayal within families. In Matthew 24:12, He warned that “because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold.” And in Luke 12:51–53, He revealed that even households would divide over truth, faith, and allegiance to Him.

The breakdown of the family, then, is not merely a social trend—it is a prophetic indicator of the end times.

God’s Desire for Family Restoration

But even amid moral collapse, God’s heart remains steadfast. The Old Testament closes with a message of reconciliation:

“He will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers, before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord.” (Malachi 4:5–6)

Before judgment comes, God extends a call for restoration. His desire is not destruction, but repentance and renewal within the family.

Paul echoes this divine order in Ephesians 6:1–4: “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right… Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.”

In an age where confusion reigns and truth is redefined, a biblically grounded family becomes a powerful witness. Faithful parents raising godly children are not just preserving tradition, they are preserving testimony.

A Call to Faithful Action

As we “cast our bread upon the waters,” we must once again place our trust in God’s design. The family is not a social construct—it is a divine covenant. In the coming days of deception and division, the Christian home will stand as one of the last lights of truth.

Let us, therefore, commit to defending life, protecting children, and restoring the family according to God’s Word. The time to stand is now, for soon, the bread we have cast in faith will return with eternal reward.

No Global Flood?: Influential Voices Are Leading Many To Abandon The Authority Of God’s Word

And yet despite the absolute clarity of Scripture, so many scholars, Christian leaders, and others still insist the flood could have been local. That’s not because of the text—it’s because they have already adopted the idea of millions of years of slow and gradual processes. Man’s interpretation of geology is now the authority, not the Word of God. It’s so discouraging to see men like Dr. Ross and Eric Metaxas influencing so many people to abandon the authority of God’s Word and instead adopt man’s word as they reinterpret the clear teaching of Scripture. It’s an attack on biblical authority.

With Its Masters In Tehran Weakened, Now Is The Golden Opportunity To Free Lebanon From Hezbollah’s Demonic Grip

Israel is well on its way to finishing the job and ensuring that Hezbollah never threatens the Jewish state in any meaningful way ever again. On Tuesday, representatives from Israel and Lebanon met in Washington, D.C. for historic peace talks aimed at ending Hezbollah's dark influence in Lebanon, where they've really established a state within a state, all with the active support and funding of the Iranian regime.
