Recently US President Joe Biden claimed that “more children in America die of a gunshot wound than any other reason, that’s stunning and that is sick.” He said something similar during the recent debate with former President Donald Trump. Is Joe Biden correct?
No. Abortion, the murder of children in their mother’s wombs (child sacrifice), which Joe Biden has aggressively promoted, is the leading cause of death of children in the US (actually, it’s been the leading cause of death globally for the past five years, with 44 million babies losing their lives in 2023, accounting for 40% of all deaths):
For at least the fifth consecutive year, abortion was the leading cause of death worldwide in 2023.
Statistics compiled by Worldometer, which were derived from World Health Organization data, show that more than 44 million babies were killed in the womb, more than several of the next leading causes of death combined.
While the broad definition of “abortion” from pro-choicers can include miscarriages, that is not what is being measured here. Those 44 million were purposefully induced abortions.
While physician-assisted abortion is illegal in several states, self-managed abortion via pills is not outlawed anywhere in the United States, which helps explain why the total number of abortions has hardly been touched since Dobbs.
The numbers vary because the number of chemical abortions is unknown, but some estimates are that around 1 million or so abortions occur in the USA every year.
Biden is a hypocrite, claiming he cares about the lives of children while callously promoting the deaths of a subset of children (the unborn). God hates the shedding of innocent blood (Proverbs 6:16–19)—whether by gun violence or by medication or surgical instruments. But the current president and his administration want even more of this child sacrifice.
A government website also lists the leading causes of death (other than abortions) among children, and you can check that out here.
Oh, and human life, made in the image of God, exists right from fertilization. Abortion is the deliberate killing (murder) of an unborn human being at any point from fertilization on—not just after 15 weeks or some other time during pregnancy.
