According to a former lobbyist quoted in Tuesdayโ€™s Washington Post, we should all be uneasy about Kelly Johnson, Speaker Mike Johnsonโ€™s wife, ministering to female staffers on Capitol Hill.

Kelly Johnson, who is a Christian counselor and in 2019 founded a non-profit ministry called โ€œOnward Christian Education Services,โ€ is the subject of a hit piece in The Post daily.

Meredith McGehee, who is identified as a former lobbyist for groups focused on โ€œcampaign finance transparency and anti-corruption measures in government,โ€ alludes to a potential conflict.

โ€œIt should make everyone uncomfortable that the speakerโ€™s wife would be raising money for a mission to serve congressional staff,โ€ she tells the Post. โ€œIt really dances on the blurred line of separation of church and state and using public resources for private interests.โ€

What โ€œpublic resourcesโ€ is McGehee claiming Mrs. Johnson is using? Neither the former lobbyist nor the Post explain other than to say her โ€œclose connection to the speakerโ€™s office could benefit the nonprofit.โ€

Could.

By this logic, any individual close to any political leader with any authority whatsoever should be ineligible to do just about anything unless the activity passes muster with the liberal media establishment.

Originally founded โ€œto help educate, equip, and empower believers to understand and live out their biblical faith and to engage the culture,โ€ the ministry expanded in recent years.  According to the groupโ€™s most recent IRS filing, Onward Christian Education Services developed โ€œa new ministry outreach and Bible study designed specifically for the hundreds of unreached young women across the country who are employed as staffers on and around Capitol Hill to help them find purpose, belonging, and Christian community.โ€

Recent studies have found that Americans are increasingly struggling to find connection and purpose. In June, Gallup reported close to half of those questioned said their lives lacked a sense of meaning, purpose โ€“ or both. These were national polls, but the need is only magnified for those living and working in the political environment of Washington, D.C.

As a Christian, Kelly Johnson said she considers herself โ€œa missionaryโ€ and that reaching out to female staffers is โ€œkind of a calling in this life for me.โ€ She also said, โ€œThis is what I love to do. This is my heart.โ€

According to the speakerโ€™s wife, Onward Christian Education Services is funded by โ€œseveral large benefactors.โ€ She suggests they give to it because they have a heart for the ministerial assistance the group provides.

Although the group is not legally obligated to do so, The Washington Post expresses frustration that it wonโ€™t disclose the names of the benefactors.

In a statement to the Post, Speaker Johnson praised the faithfulness and motivation of his wife. He stated, โ€œShe has a true gift with people and has inspired many other women to live out their faith, overcome their obstacles, and find peace and success, even in an environment as challenging as Capitol Hill.โ€

The insinuation to nefarious or unethical motivations in the Post piece reflects the typical suspicion, skepticism, and general negativity of mainstream reporters who often seem incapable of or unwilling to accept Christians behaving like Christians. In a hyper cynical climate like the Beltway, many find it impossible to believe that a Christian woman would be led to help other women without some ulterior incentive.

The Apostle Paul reminded believers in Colossae, which is modern-day Turkey, that โ€œWhatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christโ€ (Col. 3:23-24).

We applaud and celebrate the work and ministry of Kelly Johnson and other individuals who are faithfully answering the Lordโ€™s call on their lives to serve others in His name.

Why Christians Have A Biblical Responsibility To Participate In The Political Process

With the 2026 midterm elections just days away, millions of Americans are preparing to cast their ballots in an election that will have significant implications for the nationโ€™s future. With control of Congress hanging in the balance, voters will help determine the legislative agenda and political trajectory of the next two years. For Christians, the election raises questions that go beyond political parties, candidates, and policy preferences. Is voting merely a civic privilege, or does Scripture provide a theological framework for understanding it as an act of stewardship and love of neighbor? And what role should pastors and churches play in equipping believers to exercise this responsibility faithfully? As Americans prepare to head to the polls next Tuesday, these questions invite us to consider a more fundamental issue: whether Christians have a Biblical responsibility to participate in the political process.

A Barbaric Death Penalty: Politicians, Doctors, The Abortion Industry, And The Media Have Lied To Mothers

Sadly, the abortion industry continues to either deny the level of pain inflicted upon the preborn or bury the evidence by introducing โ€œexpertโ€ reports that contain deliberately vague language which seeks to assure mothers that abortion does not cross any moral barriers. Although a consensus on the impact of pain on the preborn would be a positive step in educating the public, the reality is that pain tolerance does not excuse the injustice perpetrated in abortion clinics.

The Church Cannot Remain Silent On Biblical Matters Because They Have Been Declared ‘Political’

Jesus called His followers the salt of the earth and the light of the world. Neither image suggests withdrawal. Both describe engagement that makes a difference. So the issue is not whether the church should become political. It is whether Christians will remain biblical when biblical truth has political consequences. Our calling is neither to become the mouthpiece of a party nor to retreat into silence. It is to stand on Godโ€™s word, defend what is right, confront what is wrong, and speak with courage โ€” even when the culture would rather we remain silent.
