‘Highest Percentage Of No Votes In Irish History’: Ireland Rejects Effort to Redefine Family

Voters in Ireland have resoundingly rejected two constitutional amendments that attempted to redefine traditional definitions of family and motherhood.

More than 1.5 million Irish voters cast ballots March 9 with 67% rejecting the proposed Family Amendment and 74% defeating the Care Amendment.

The Christian Instituteโ€™s (TCI) Ciarรกn Kelly welcomed the result, calling it โ€œa resounding affirmation of marriage and motherhood.โ€ TCI is a nondenominational charity in the United Kingdom that advocates for a Biblical worldview in the United Kingdom and elsewhere.

The Family Amendment would have altered the Irish Constitutionโ€™s definition of the family. Currently, the constitution โ€œrecognises the Family as the natural primary and fundamental unit group of Society, and as a moral institution possessing inalienable and imprescriptible rights, antecedent and superior to all positive law,โ€ and declares that the family โ€œis foundedโ€ upon marriage. The Family Amendment aimed to change the constitution to redefine the family as โ€œfounded on marriage or on other durable relationshipsโ€ and would have struck from the constitution the clarification that family โ€œis foundedโ€ upon marriage.

The Care Amendment proposed that two phrases from the constitution regarding women and mothers be replaced with one gender-neutral sentence, thus removing any reference to women or motherhood. The Irish Constitution currently states that, โ€œby her life within the home, woman gives to the State a support without which the common good cannot be achievedโ€ and pledges โ€œto ensure that mothers shall not be obliged by economic necessity to engage in labour to the neglect of their duties in the home.โ€ Those declarations would have been replaced with the statement, โ€œThe State recognises that the provision of care, by members of a family to one another by reason of the bonds that exist among them, gives to Society a support without which the common good cannot be achieved, and shall strive to support such provision.โ€

The Irish Times noted that the proposed constitutional changes were rejected by โ€œthe highest percentage of No votes in any referendum in Irish history.โ€ Out of Irelandโ€™s 39 constituencies, only one voted โ€œyes,โ€ by a margin of only 255 votes.

Even though the proposed constitutional changes had the support of the majority of Irelandโ€™s politicians and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), a number of organizations campaigned for โ€œNoNoโ€ votes.

The pro-life, pro-family Irish Freedom Party had urged rejecting the proposals and celebrated Saturdayโ€™s resounding โ€œno,โ€ writing on social media, โ€œThe referendum results reveal a huge disconnect between the people of Ireland and the political establishment. They seem to live on a different planet to normal people.โ€ The conservative political party added, โ€œThis NoNo Vote is just the beginning of a Nationalist comeback. Itโ€™s a clear statement that weโ€™ve had enough of weirdo Transsexual indoctrination of our kids, mass immigration into our country, and Uniparty instruction. We will not have mothers and sex-based rights removed from our Constitution.โ€

Ireland, with a population of 5.3 million, opted to end constitutional limits on same-sex marriage in 2015 and abortion in 2018.

Patience Has Run Out: Iran’s Regime Showed Its True Face And Made Clear That It Has No Interest In Peace

The Memorandum of Understanding that was signed between the US and Iran last month is clearly out the window at this point. In response to repeated Iranian attacks on shipping, the US has carried out massive airstrikes against Iran for several nights in a row. Will the apocalyptic Iranian death cult get the memo and change its ways as a result? Highly unlikely. Iran is back to its old tricks, reportedly firing missiles and drones at Jordan, Bahrain, Kuwait, and even its only two allies in the entire region, Oman and Qatar. The regime has not fired upon Israel yet in this latest round of hostilities. The Arab nations may not respond, but Iran knows that Israel willโ€”and with overwhelming force.

Because for 250 years this nation has returned again and again to the God who created this beautiful country that we get to call home. We do this not because weโ€™re perfect people; weโ€™re not. But woven into the fabric of America is a deep and persistent belief that we cannot persevere on our ownโ€”that we need God.โ€

Called Out From The Culture: The Hope For America Is The Church

I believe that the hope for America is the churchโ€”God working through his church. Christians need to live up to their name. As Christ followers, we need to be Christlike. And if the church would be what it was meant to be, then it would change our nation. But letโ€™s localize it. If your church would be what it ought to be, it could change your city. It could change your county, and it could change your state. Letโ€™s localize it even more. If you would be what you ought to be as a follower of Jesus Christ and as a part of the church, then what a difference it could make in your church.
