We woke up yesterday morning to a very different America. We heard a lot about a coming blue wave, but the results of Tuesday’s midterm elections were more like a blue tsunami.
Where to begin? Democrats flipped both the House and Senate by large margins, and now also control a majority of the nation’s governorships.
Those tight Senate races everyone was watching in Michigan and Texas? In the end, they weren’t so tight after all. Abdul El-Sayed, a notorious Israel-basher with family ties to the Muslim Brotherhood, will now sit in the U.S. Senate after defeating Republican Mike Rogers by 7 percentage points.
Texas may be an even bigger shocker. Democrats swept races in a state that had been a Republican stronghold for decades. Incumbent Governor Greg Abbott lost to Democrat Gina Hinojosa by at least 7 points. James Tallarico’s declarations that God is “non-binary” and that there are “six genders” didn’t seem to hurt him with voters. He trounced Republican Ken Paxton by some 12 percentage points. Throughout the Lone Star State, Democrats made significant gains, and we can now say Texas, the second-largest state in the union, has flipped blue.
And it’s not alone.
In Iowa and Ohio, both reliably red states, Democrats picked up the governorship and seats in the U.S. Senate. Seven Senate seats in all flipped to Democrats, including South Carolina and Kansas, and Democrats now have a 10-seat majority in the upper chamber. In the House, it was even worse for Republicans. Democrats flipped some 25 seats and now have a large majority there as well.
The good news for Republicans is that they did hold Florida, where Byron Donalds was elected the state’s first African-American governor, and Ashley Moody barely turned back socialist Angie Nixon.
All in all, an absolute debacle for Republicans. There is no way to sugarcoat it.
How did it happen? Exit polls showed that many voters were upset by the Iran war and the price of gas.
In my view, that’s an issue that could have been avoided if President Trump had only finished the job in Iran back in April, but the president made the absolute right call to destroy Iran’s nuclear weapons program. The world’s number one state sponsor of terrorism was on the verge of acquiring the world’s deadliest weapons. Trump realized that a nuclear bomb in the hands of Islamic fanatics who are sworn to our destruction was a clear and present danger to the United States.
He had the courage and moral clarity to act, knowing there may be political fallout in an election year. In the long run, history—our kids and grandkids—will judge him kindly for it, but he made a big mistake in stopping short and not finishing the job after dealing crushing blows to Iran’s regime early on. We entered into a seemingly endless cycle of talking to the regime, then bombing, then pausing, then more talks. All the while, it was obvious that Iran’s fanatical leaders had no intention of agreeing to any credible deal with the United States. As a result, the war dragged on for months right into the midterms, and gas prices remained high.
I’ve been saying it here since April: Mr. President, you made the right call. Now finish the job in Iran.
We will see what effect yesterday’s results have on that going forward, but there are a few other takeaways.
Our American electorate can now be described as politically schizophrenic. The past 20 years have seen wild swings in practically every election cycle, from the presidency on down. In 2024, Republicans won the presidency, the House, the Senate, and a majority of governorships. Now, just two years later, that’s all been flipped on its head. We have now entered an unprecedented moment in American history, where literal socialists and radical Islamists who hold views that are inherently hostile to our country will now sit in the U.S. Congress.
Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan is one of them. Consider his acceptance speech from last night: “Michigan, we did it! My name is Abdul Rahman Muhammad El-Sayed. And I am so proud and honored to stand here as your senator-elect from the great state of Michigan. Up until right about now, you might have noticed I always say, inshallah, or Allah willing, whenever the outcome of this race was mentioned. But today, tonight, we can turn that inshallah into alhamdulillah. Donald, look, I know you struggled with my name. So after J.D. swears me in January, you can just go on and call me senator.”
He is riding high now. He and his fellow Democrats will undoubtedly use their newfound power to obstruct President Trump at every turn. Impeachment and investigations—it’s all on the table. They have been telling us their plans openly. Fasten your seatbelts. I hope people realize what they voted for.
Now, at the end of the day, Barack Obama, George W. Bush, and even Ronald Reagan all suffered big midterm election setbacks. Republicans are not out, but it is a very tough moment, no doubt, as we look ahead to 2028.
Isn’t it good to know that through it all, God is still on the throne? He’s in control, even when everything seems to be falling apart. It’s time to pray for our nation like never before.
