Church Leaders in England, Italy Call for National Day of Prayer Amid Coronavirus Crisis

After US President Donald Trump called for a national day of Prayer for America over the Coronavirus Pandemic March 15th, both the United Kingdom and Italy are both following suit, calling for this Sunday, March 22nd, to be a National day of Prayer for their countries, to fight the Coronavirus spread:

Church leaders in England have called Christians to participate in a National Day of Prayer and Action on March 22 in response to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.

The call was issued by the presidents of Churches Together in England, a national ecumenical group that supports and encourages churches from a wide range of traditions to work together in unity. The statement, which was signed by Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, as well as other church leaders from various denominations, urges Christians to unite in prayer.

โ€œAt such a time as this, when so many are fearful and there is great uncertainty, we are reminded of our dependence on our loving Heavenly Father and the future that he holds,โ€ the statement reads.

โ€œWhether you are continuing to worship as congregations or not, we have the great privilege and freedom to be able to call upon God, wherever we are, individually and corporately, for healing in our nation. We would pray for all in leadership at this time, making decisions about the containment of the COVID-19 virus, for those working in health and social care, and especially for the most vulnerable, whether elderly or those with underlying health conditions.โ€

Asking people to pray and โ€œlight a candle in the windows of your homes as a visible symbol of the light of life, Jesus Christ, our source and hope in prayer,โ€ Christians are also encouraged to take action in showing love for others.

โ€œAlongside your prayers, take the opportunity to telephone or email someone who is isolated, buy some additional food for your local foodbank, or offer to deliver shopping for an elderly neighbour. We may not be able to touch physically, but we can make connections in so many other ways.โ€

In response to the National Day of Prayer, R.T. Kendall, an author, speaker and theologian who served as pastor at Westminster Chapel in London from 1977 to 2002, said: โ€œโ€˜Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any peopleโ€™ (Proverbs 14:34). โ€˜Blessed is that nation whose God is the Lordโ€™ (Psalm 33:12). Apart from these Scriptures, history has shown that when a nation bows its knees to God, He honors it. The last time Britain had a day of prayer was because of D-Day in June 1944. And look at the amazing way God stepped in. I am so proud of Archbishop Justin Welby for doing this. God will honor this. It also maybe be the way Britain begins to take God seriously! I hope so.โ€

The call is also being supported by the Evangelical AllianceChurches Together in Britain and IrelandCytรปn (Churches Together in Wales) and the Church of Scotland.

Harbinger Daily Addition:

Franklin Graham also noted that Italy, which has been extremely hard hit by the virus, is also calling for Sunday, March 22nd, to be a National day of Prayer for their country. Rev Graham encouraged evangelicals to join in the prayer for Italy also:

National Day of Prayer

The Italian Evangelical Alliance issued an appeal to all evangelical churches, ministries, and believers to join in prayer todayโ€”Sunday, March 22โ€”asking God to be revealed in this very difficult time in their country.

We certainly want to join them. We stand with all of the evangelical churches who are praying across Italy. And our hearts go out to the people of this great country who are enduring incredible suffering. We grieve with those who have lost loved ones. And we pray that God, who answers prayer, will turn and abate this dreadful disease. Will you pray especially for the people of Italy today? Let us pray that the devastating effects of the coronavirus will be halted worldwide.

Antisemtism And Vitriol For Israel: One Of The Most Distinguishing Signs Of Our Time

The steadily intensifying antisemitism of our day points to the reality of the rapidly approaching Tribulation period. Itโ€™s one of the more distinguishing signs of our time because it aligns with so many prophecies that predict hatred for Israel and the Jews during the last days. In Zechariah 8:13, the Lord foretold what we see today along with His promise to dramatically reverse the fortunes of the Jewish people: "And as you have been a byword of cursing among the nations, O house of Judah and house of Israel, so will I save you, and you shall be a blessing. Fear not, but let your hands be strong.โ€

Called Out From The Culture: The Hope for America Is The Church

I believe that the hope for America is the churchโ€”God working through his church. Christians need to live up to their name. As Christ followers, we need to be Christlike. And if the church would be what it was meant to be, then it would change our nation. But letโ€™s localize it. If your church would be what it ought to be, it could change your city. It could change your county, and it could change your state. Letโ€™s localize it even more. If you would be what you ought to be as a follower of Jesus Christ and as a part of the church, then what a difference it could make in your church.

Will America Last Another 250 Years?

Looking back, there can be no denying that God has indeed shed His graceโ€”His unmerited favorโ€”on our land, from sea to shining sea. But does our national โ€œsoulโ€ encourage self-control? Do our laws champion ordered liberty? Is our success tempered with nobleness? Is brotherhood the defining characteristic of any good we aspire to reflect? By all of those measures, America seems decidedly adrift. We are drifting farther and farther from Natureโ€™s Godโ€”the Ruler of the Universe our Founders called upon and credited with for our celebrated independence.
