Britain’s House Of Lords Rejects Assisted Suicide Legislation

Britain’s House of Lords struck down an attempt to legalize assisted suicide in England and Wales Wednesday night, rejecting an amendment to the Health and care Bill which would allow terminally ill adults to seek medical assistance to take their own lives.

The amendment, sponsored by Lord Forsyth, was voted down by 179 votes to 145 Wednesday evening, marking the twelfth time that such bills have failed to pass through Parliament in the last 25 years.

Forsyth proposed amending the Health and Care Billcurrently making its way through the U.K.’s upper House to include a clause on “assisted dying.” The amendment demanded that the “Secretary of State must, within the period of 12 months beginning with the day on which this Act is passed, lay before Parliament a draft Bill to permit terminally ill, mentally competent adults legally to end their own lives with medical assistance.”

Speaking in the House of Lords last night, Forsyth argued that the amendment “has nothing whatever to do with the wrongs and rights of assisted dying [suicide],” stating that rather it is to enable assisted suicide “to be properly considered by Parliament” while the public “are crying out for this to be done.”

Contesting Forsyth’s assertions, Lord Howarth said that the “compassion and kind intentions” of those who support the proposal “misreads human nature,” adding that legalizing assisted suicide “would create more suffering [than] it would alleviate.”

“The offspring of this compassion would be a coarsening of our society and a diminution of the value we place upon life,” Howarth determined.

Baroness Campbell of Surbiton, founder of the disability rights campaign group Not Dead Yet U.K., fiercely opposed the amendment as bringing “lethal consequences” which would result in “some vulnerable people needlessly taking their own life.”

Forcing the government to draft a bill on assisted suicide within 12 months, she said, would be a “blatant manipulation of the parliamentary process” and set a “dangerous precedent and should be resisted.”

Following the defeat of the proposed amendment, Campbell celebrated its failure to be passed “by the back door” and stressed that disabled people “want support to live, not support to die.”

Ciarán Kelly, head of communications at lobby group The Christian Institute, said that the proposal’s defeat closes off “a real threat to the lives of vulnerable people.”

“Recent scandals over blanket use of ‘Do Not Resuscitate’ orders showed that, sadly, some health professionals have lost sight of the value of human life,” Kelly explained, adding that “[w]eakening the law would have put vulnerable people under pressure to end their lives for fear of being a financial, emotional or care burden on others.”

Not only would vulnerable individuals be opened up to undue pressures and being taken advantage of, but Kelly contended that the amendment “clearly breached the Sixth Commandment and denied the value of every person as an individual made in the image of God.”

While proponents of assisted suicide have tried to show that permitting physician assisted killing in law can be “safe,” “international evidence shows it is impossible to establish sufficient safeguards to protect vulnerable people once the law is liberalised,” Kelly noted.

“Keeping assisted suicide illegal is the only safeguard,” he said.

HD Editor’s Note: Why Is This News Biblically Relevant?

This moral issue surrounding euthanasia, and its growing acceptance of it with society, is essential for Christians to understand Biblically.

Ken Ham, Founder and CEO of Answers In Genesis, in a recent article, asserted that this problem results from an increasingly secularized culture.

“We’re in a war and there is no neutrality (Matthew 12:30). We’ve been in a war since the garden when Adam and Eve sinned, but sometimes it’s more obvious than other times,” he asserted. “And this spiritual war is growing increasingly clear as our secular culture determines to trust man’s word, not God’s Word, and forces Christians, in particular, to approve of, celebrate, and participate in evil, sinful practices.”

“Where does this view that individuals should be allowed to end their own lives if they have a terminal diagnosis come from? (Keep in mind, as well, that euthanasia never stops with “just” the terminally ill. In other nations, individuals—including children—with disabilities or depression are being euthanized.)” Ham wrote.

“Well, in a very secularized culture that is swamped in evolutionary thought with an atheistic, relativistic worldview (based on naturalism), human life has no more value than an animal’s,” he explained. “But, we know in a biblical worldview that man is very different to the animals, as man is made in the image of God. And God’s Son became a man (the God-man) to die and rise from the dead to pay the penalty for our sin and offer eternal life. It’s the human race (yes, one race) that can receive the free gift of salvation—that’s how valuable human life is. And that value isn’t dependent on health, level of development, what someone can contribute to society, or anything else!”

Constant Crisis Has Created Spiritual Numbness—And That May Be The Greatest Danger Of All

The modern world is experiencing what many psychologists and cultural analysts now describe as “apocalypse fatigue.” After years of pandemics, lockdowns, economic instability, global conflict, social unrest, and relentless media-driven fear cycles, people are emotionally worn down. Many no longer react with urgency to alarming headlines because they have become desensitized. Constant crisis has created spiritual numbness. Ironically, this emotional fatigue is occurring at the exact moment Bible prophecy indicates the world should be paying closer attention than ever before.

Weaponized Compassion: Requiring Legal Assimilation Is Not Bigotry

Under the guise of standard social justice rhetoric, which has gained steam throughout the 21st century, political forces have intentionally grouped vastly different global populations into a single, massive group, referred to as "the oppressed." Within this manufactured coalition, one group has become particularly shielded from critical scrutiny: Muslims. Everyone is welcome in America, under the big umbrella of freedom. The United States welcomes people of any faith, ethnicity, or background—including Muslims—provided they enter through established, lawful channels and possess the proper motivation to honor this nation. This is legal assimilation. What this is not is bigotry.

Prophetic Pieces: As Putin Ups The Ante In The Arms Race, Russia Considers Providing Refuge To Top Iranian Leaders

Prophetic events in the end times right now are casting their shadows over the Middle East like never before. Preparations for the Gog Magog coalition prophesied in Ezekiel 38 and 39 are increasing and intensifying. Written 2,500 years ago by Ezekiel, these chapters prophesy an end-time invasion of Israel led by the nations of Russia, Iran, and Turkey. Two significant developments showcase that the prophetic pieces are falling perfectly into place.
