A ‘Sunni NATO’ Aimed At Countering American And Israeli Power In The Middle East?: Making Sense Of The ‘Mecca Agreement’

Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan recently signed the Mecca Joint Defense Agreement, a historic trilateral collective security pact that brings together some of the most powerful states in the Sunni Muslim world. The stated purpose of the agreement, which has been described as a “Sunni NATO,” is to strengthen “collective deterrence.” It features a NATO-like mutual defense clause that stipulates that “any armed attack against any one of the three states shall be regarded as an attack against them all.”

The agreement also aims to deepen military and intelligence cooperation, as well as defense industry collaboration. Saudi Arabia has the largest economy in the Middle East, Turkey maintains one of the largest militaries in the region, and Pakistan has nuclear weapons. If implemented, the alliance could reshape the regional balance of power.

The tripartite agreement has fueled speculation about its ultimate objective. Although the founding states insist the pact is not directed against any single country, many analysts believe it is a first step toward creating a Sunni Islamic bloc aimed at deterring threats from a Shiite Islamic bloc led by Iran. Turkey’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said the defense agreement could be expanded to include other countries in the region, such as Egypt.

Some worry the Mecca Agreement is aimed at countering Israel. Just a day after the pact was signed, Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khawaja Asif said the Islamic world “must unite to confront the common threat posed by Israel.” He added, “Israel poses a threat to all of us. Islamic countries must adopt a coordinated approach to address this threat.” Turkish leaders have also intensified verbal attacks against Israel and vowed to reconquer Jerusalem for Islam. A senior Israeli official said the alliance “is directed against Israel.”

Still others believe the joint defense agreement is a hedge against a reduced American presence in the Middle East. Middle East expert Steven Cook worries the defense pact is a reaction to the erosion of U.S. influence in the Middle East and an attempt to shape an alternative security order. He predicts the Middle East will eventually split into two blocs: one comprised of countries committed to the Abraham Accords and the other made up of those devoted to its alternative, the Mecca Agreement. “This is a major change, and it is hard to overstate its significance,” he wrote.

Dov Zakheim, a former Pentagon official, warns the agreement portends a potential nuclear arms race: “Should the U.S. significantly downsize its forces in the region, and were Iran to produce a nuclear weapon, Islamabad [Pakistan] would spare no effort to enable its new partners to develop their own nuclear arsenals.”

For now, the agreement appears to concern politics and diplomacy more than the creation of a real military alliance. Analyst Lazar Berman believes the three Sunni powers “are not about to go to war for each other, and they know it.” He speculates that Turkey is using the agreement to demonstrate it is a regional power, Pakistan is trying to strengthen itself against India, and Saudi Arabia wants to show that it can create a security architecture independent of the United States.

Even if the Mecca Agreement is mostly symbolic for now, Jonathan Spyer warns it would be a mistake to underestimate its potential future threat. “Israel should be watching the slow crystallization of this bloc carefully,” he advised. “Jerusalem, and Islamic claims there, are likely to form the symbolic element that knits the emergent group together. Symbols, and especially Jerusalem, often end up acquiring practical political and sometimes military form.”

Erick Stakelbeck, host of “The Watchman Newscast” and “Stakelbeck Tonight,” highlighted the complex dangers posed by the “Mecca Agreement” and the need for prayer:

Israel was just threatened by a nuclear-armed Islamic nation—and it wasn’t Iran.

Iran’s nuclear weapons program has been mostly obliterated by the U.S. and Israeli militaries over the past 14 months—thanks to the bold leadership of President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Pakistan, however, currently possesses approximately 170 nuclear warheads. It’s the only Islamic nation that has the bomb. Pakistani Defense Minister Khawaja Asif made some very disturbing comments about the world’s one and only Jewish state.

Asif called Israel an “illegitimate state” and “a threat to the entire Muslim world.” He demanded all Islamic nations unite militarily against Israel, especially over the Palestinian issue. Again, this is the Defense Minister for a nuclear-armed Islamic nation!

His comments came as a new defense pact was announced between Pakistan, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia.

The newly inked “Mecca Joint Defense Agreement” says that any armed attack against any one of the three states shall be regarded as an attack against them all. Call me crazy, but that sounds an awful lot like the NATO arrangement—despite the three signatories downplaying this deal as strictly defensive in nature.

No matter how you look at it, this is a serious alliance, and the U.S. and Israel are no doubt taking notice. Pakistan has the bomb, Saudi Arabia has vast economic resources, and Turkey is a NATO member nation.

In other words, the world’s most volatile and strategic region just got even more complex. These are dangerous times.

As Israel’s enemies grow more aggravated, the need for prayer is greater than ever. Now is the time to stand together and pray for God’s protection over Israel and America.

A Wicked Hatred: If We Claim To Follow Jesus, Then We Must Imitate His Love For The Jewish People

This article should be entirely unnecessary because it expresses a Biblical teaching that is so obvious that it seems impossible to miss. Unfortunately, recent years have revealed that many professing Christians are deeply confused about what Scripture teaches regarding the Jewish people. Instead, they seem to base their views on whatever theological and geopolitical ideas are popular in the moment. Repeating antisemitic tropes and conspiracies about Jewish people is wicked. We see no shortage of these things from popular political commentators like Candace Owens, Tucker Carlson, and Megan Kelly. They often hide behind the lie that they are just asking questions, but what they are really doing is implying that the Jewish people are to blame for much of our society’s ills and that they secretly control our nation (or the world).

The Scenes Of Chaos In France Are Shocking But Not Surprising

The absolute chaos and anarchy we are seeing in France is shocking, no doubt, but it's not surprising if you've been following what has been happening in Western Europe over the past two or three decades. During that time, many of us begged our European friends to secure their borders, to cut the mass Islamic migration, and preserve their culture, society, and civilization. They didn't listen. Now we see the bitter fruits. The wave of Islamists that descended upon the continent was met with a welcome mat—a prayer mat—rolled out by woke, weak European governments. Those Islamists are now aligning with leftists, Marxists, socialists, and communists—and there's no easy way out as this red-green alliance sweeps throughout Europe.

In The Voting Booth, You Won’t See Its Name On The Ballot… But Make No Mistake, Israel Is There

If you’re like most Americans, you’ve had plenty on your mind leading into the midterms—inflation, immigration, healthcare, artificial intelligence, the economy, the Iran war, and control of Congress. But another issue has risen to the top of the nation’s agenda: Israel. Congressional representatives are powerful. Congress controls funding, shapes sanctions, and influences American diplomacy. The men and women elected in November will determine whether the historic U.S.-Israel relationship remains strong or continues undergoing the most significant political reassessment in generations. When you enter the voting booth, you won’t see Israel’s name on the ballot. But make no mistake: Israel is there.
