Pastor Jailed for Holding Church Services Amid Pandemic Restrictions

James Coates, lead pastor of GraceLife Church in Alberta, Canada, has been jailed for holding in-person worship services amid ongoing pandemic restrictions.

Coatesโ€™ attorney, James Kitchen, said the preacher is willing to remain behind bars in order to do the โ€œright thing,โ€ according to CTV News.

In mid-December, Alberta Health Services inspector Janine Hanrahan issued an order against GraceLife, directly mandating the church to ensure all congregants, staff members, and leaders are wearing masks while on the property, to enforce social distancing of at least six feet between all persons, and to restrict occupancy of the facility to 15% or less of the buildingโ€™s total operational capacity.

AHS then filed a court application in January to enforce the order through the courts. The application named Coates, granting the health agency the power to jail the pastor if he continued to hold worship services in violation of government edicts, according to the Justice Centre, which is representing the minister.

By the end of January, AHS issued yet another order to Coates, demanding he โ€œimmediately closeโ€ GraceLife โ€œuntil such time as the premises comes into complianceโ€ with government-sanctioned rules.

Coates continued holding services at GraceLife โ€” a church with approximately 400 congregants โ€” despite AHS orders.

The Justice Centre reported that two officers with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police visited Coates following the Feb. 7 worship service.

โ€œThe officers told Pastor Coates that he was under arrest and must agree to stop breaching the [Chief Medical Officer of Health] Orders,โ€ the Center reported. โ€œPastor Coates explained to the officers that he could not do that because to do so would violate his conscience and prevent him from fulfilling his duty as a minister to lead his congregation in worship. The officers then left, without arresting him.โ€

Coates preached again this past Sunday.

Following this weekendโ€™s services, RCMP officers notified Coates they would be arresting him Tuesday. The pastor turned himself in.

Kitchen described the orders in place in Alberta as โ€œreminiscent of what one encounters in dystopian novels such as George Orwellโ€™s โ€˜1984.โ€™โ€

โ€œThe congregants of GraceLife refuse to accept the Alberta governmentโ€™s dystopian โ€˜new normal,โ€™โ€ the attorney said. โ€œTheir first loyalty is to obey their God, not government. They are committed to gathering, as they always have, for in-person worship services. They will challenge this excessive and unlawful government oppression rather than turn their back on their beliefs. They also believe they are lawfully exercising their Charter-protected freedoms and that the governmentโ€™s restrictions are not justifiable.โ€

โ€œGovernments never destroy civil liberties without pointing to some reason that sounds good, such as โ€˜safetyโ€™ or โ€˜equality,โ€™โ€ he added. โ€œThe very reason certain rights and freedoms are protected by the Charter is so that government cannot simply ignore those rights by merely asserting its actions are for a good cause.โ€

And in a public statement issued earlier this month, the pastoral staff at GraceLife condemned the ongoing restrictions, stating, in part: โ€œWe believe [people] should responsibly return to their lives. Churches should open, businesses should open, families and friends should come together around meals, and people should begin to exercise their civil liberties again.โ€

โ€œOtherwise we may not get them back,โ€ the statement continued. โ€œIn fact, some say we are on the cusp of reaching the point of no return. Protect the vulnerable, exercise reasonable precautions, but begin to live your lives againโ€ฆ Living life comes with risks. Every time we get behind the wheel of a car, we are assuming a degree of risk. We accept that risk due to the benefits of driving. Yes, though vastly overblown, there are associated risks with Covid, as there are with other infections. Human life, though precious, is fragile. As such, death looms over all of us. That is why we need a message of hope.โ€

Hebrews 10:25 KJV – โ€œNot forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.โ€

UPDATE – Alberta Pastor Charged with Breaking COVID-19 Restrictions Refuses Bail Conditions

On Feb. 16, Coates turned himself in to the Parkland RCMP and remains in custody.

โ€œFollowing a bail hearing before a justice of the peace, Coates was to be released (Tuesday) on conditions,โ€ the RCMP news release said. โ€œHe remained in custody overnight after refusing to agree to those conditions. This morning in Stony Plain provincial court he continued to refuse to agree with those conditions.โ€

Coates is scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 24.

GraceLife church said in its statement that many Albertans became afraid and were โ€œconvinced of the efficacy of government lockdowns for two reasons: misinformation and fearmongering.โ€

โ€œThe media has so pounded the COVID-19 drum since the โ€˜pandemicโ€™ began, almost exclusively emphasizing caseload and deaths, that people are fearful. So fearful, in fact, they have been convinced that yielding up their civil liberties to the government is in their best interests.โ€

Coates said in his sermon on Feb. 14 that governments exist only as instruments of God and must follow Godโ€™s plan, which includes unfettered freedom of worship.

He said when governments fail to follow Godโ€™s plan, churches have a duty to challenge and push them back onto the proper path.

โ€œWe must call government to its God-ordained duty,โ€ Coates told the congregation.

Demonizing The Jewish State: Why Australia’s Attempts To Tackle Antisemitism Are Falling Disturbingly Short

Many attempt to mask their antisemitism by claiming that anti-Zionism is merely impassioned criticism of a nation that just happens to be Jewish. By claiming Zionism is a โ€œmodern colonial ideologyโ€ they attempt to legitimise Palestinian ownership of the land at the expense of Jewish self-determination in the ancestral Jewish homeland. The simple equation in the anti-Zionist mind is that if Zionism is indeed colonial, then the State of Israel is illegitimate. But what most people refuse to accept is that the Jewish people do not just have a legal and historical right to the land, they have a biblical claim to it as their national homeland as well.ย  ย ย

The Hunt For Eichmann: Israel’s Daring Mission To Capture A Man With The Blood Of Millions On His Hands

The plan to abduct Eichmann, dubbed Operation Finale, was a complex mission involving Mossad agents and a civilian physician who entered Argentina during its 150th anniversary celebration of independence from Spain. The timing was crucial, as Israelโ€™s airline El Al did not normally fly to South America, but a government delegation provided cover for the operation. โ€œDead or alive,โ€ Prime Minister David Ben Gurion told Harel before he left on the mission, โ€œjust bring Eichmann back with you. โ€ฆ Preferably alive. It would be very important, morally, for the young generations of Israel.โ€

Will America Last Another 250 Years?

Looking back, there can be no denying that God has indeed shed His graceโ€”His unmerited favorโ€”on our land, from sea to shining sea. But does our national โ€œsoulโ€ encourage self-control? Do our laws champion ordered liberty? Is our success tempered with nobleness? Is brotherhood the defining characteristic of any good we aspire to reflect? By all of those measures, America seems decidedly adrift. We are drifting farther and farther from Natureโ€™s Godโ€”the Ruler of the Universe our Founders called upon and credited with for our celebrated independence.
