Thousands gathered on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., Sunday to worship and pray as many of the country’s top government and faith leaders proclaimed that America desperately needs God—and the only way forward is to live under His Lordship.
People came from across the United States and beyond—including Canada and the United Kingdom—for the daylong celebration called Rededicate 250. It’s one of multiple events taking place ahead of America’s 250th anniversary.
Under a blazing sun, temperatures approached 90 degrees as speakers recounted the faith of our Founding Fathers and God’s sovereign protection throughout our history. Pastors and notable leaders encouraged the crowd to follow God unreservedly.
In a video, Franklin Graham called on people to put their faith in Him as he explained the Good News of Jesus Christ.
“I pray that we as individuals and as a nation will humble ourselves before God, confess our sins to Him, and turn back to the God of our fathers in repentance,” he said. “Today, as we prepare to observe this important milestone in our nation’s history, there is no better moment than right now for each of us to look deep into our own hearts and quietly repent of our sins and call upon the Name of Almighty God.”
Cissie Graham Lynch took the platform next and underscored the historic nature of the event.
“For 250 years this nation has returned again and again to the God who created this beautiful country that we get to call home,” she said. “We do this not because we’re perfect people; we’re not. But woven into the fabric of America is a deep and persistent belief that we cannot persevere on our own—that we need God.”
