1 in 5 Americans Identifies as ‘Spiritual but Not Religious,’ Pew Research Finds

The Pew Research Center recently released the results of their โ€œSpirituality Among Americansโ€ survey. And the results highlight a trend weโ€™ve been seeing for yearsโ€”the rise of the โ€œspiritual but not religious.โ€ These are individuals (mostly younger people) who donโ€™t identify with any particular religion or faith, but who believe themselves to be โ€œspiritual,โ€ usually pulling from a variety of religions to create a personalized belief system.

So, how many of these โ€œspiritual but not religiousโ€ individuals are there? Well, the survey broke respondents into four groups:

  • 48% โ€œidentified themselves as both spiritual and religious.โ€
  • 22% said they are โ€œspiritual but not religious.โ€
  • 21% claimed to be โ€œneither spiritual nor religious.โ€
  • 10% identified as โ€œreligious but not spiritual.โ€

What do all these categories really mean? Well, consider that a majority of those who identify as both spiritual and religious โ€œbelieve in the God of the Bibleโ€ (84%) but only 20% of the โ€œspiritual but not religiousโ€ Americans do. Instead of claiming faith in the one true God, nearly three-quarters of them think there is โ€œsome other higher power or spiritual force in the universe.โ€

So how do we reach these โ€œspiritual but not religiousโ€ individuals with the gospel? First, we must realize that many people are interested in spiritual thingsโ€”and that makes sense! God has put eternity in their hearts, and theyย knowย thereโ€™s a God, even if they reject the biblical God. Theyโ€™re searching for answers but looking in all the wrong places. So donโ€™t be afraid to start spiritual conversations with peopleโ€”they are looking, and the answers they need are in Godโ€™s Word! Romans 1ย tells us God made it evident to all that he is the Creator.

Itโ€™s also a reminder that we canโ€™t just start with Jesus for many people. They have no belief in or even concept of the biblical God. Instead we need to start the way God doesโ€”in Genesis! We need to help people see God as the Creator, the one true God who made everything. We need to help people understand the fall and how sin entered creation and that weโ€™re all sinners (using Godโ€™s law as a mirror, as our friends over at Living Waters do, can be helpful for getting people to realize that they too are sinners). Then, once they understand the one true God and our sin problem, we can introduce them to Jesus and what he did for us. After all, the good news only makes sense if you understand the bad news first!

Young people have been fed the lie of secularism and atheism, but many are now realizing how empty it is and are turning to other things for meaning, purpose, and hope. The problem is they are turning to other broken cisterns that cannot provide the living water they desperately need! The only person who can supply living water is Jesus Christ through His death on the cross for our sins and resurrection from the grave.

So get out there and tell people about His free offer of salvation!

Moral Corruption: Our World Has Grown Accustomed To Embracing Lies

We live in a time when the level of mental straying from long-held and obvious truths tells us we are near the end of the church age and approaching the tribulation. We have become familiar with new terms being invented to accommodate the beliefs of a deluded world. Gender dysphoria is one of those terms. This refers to the condition of feeling oneโ€™s emotional and psychological identity as male or female is the opposite of oneโ€™s biological sex. The key word here is feelings; the individualโ€™s gender is determined by their feelings and not the facts of genetics and biology. This indicates a mental straying from what is actually true. In other words, you can use orange spray paint on an apple and try calling it an orange, but it wonโ€™t change it from being an apple.

Amnesty International Receives Severe Backlash After Placing Christian Groups On ‘Anti-Rights’ List

Christian Concern and some others of these organisations are used to being targeted for boldly tackling contentious issues like transgenderism and abortion. Others of those listed are Christian media outlets or groups that are rarely in the media which are not often attacked for being contentious. Some might be considered meek by comparison. What this report illustrates is that no one is safe. Being polite and gentle will not save you from the attacks against Christians when they come.

Called Out From The Culture: The Hope For America Is The Church

I believe that the hope for America is the churchโ€”God working through his church. Christians need to live up to their name. As Christ followers, we need to be Christlike. And if the church would be what it was meant to be, then it would change our nation. But letโ€™s localize it. If your church would be what it ought to be, it could change your city. It could change your county, and it could change your state. Letโ€™s localize it even more. If you would be what you ought to be as a follower of Jesus Christ and as a part of the church, then what a difference it could make in your church.
