A New York City Democratic legislator has introduced a bill in the New York State Assembly mandating that the state’s public university system provide free abortion medications at all State University of New York health centers.
Assemblyman Harvey Epstein contends the law is necessary because college students’ busy schedules, lack of transportation options and low incomes inhibit access to abortion clinic services.
The bill states: “Each public college student health center shall make available to all students abortion by medication techniques onsite. This service shall be provided by medical professionals on staff at such student health centers or by a third party who has contracted with a university to provide such medical services.”
The New York collegiate abortion pill mandate has been referred to the state’s Higher Education Committee for approval. The bill’s passage seems likely following New York legislators’ approval in January of abortion on demand without any restrictions.
Patricia Mosley, director of Life, Culture and Women’s Advocacy with the Family Research Council in Washington, D.C., has written an issue analysis titled, “The Next Abortion Battleground: Chemical Abortion.”
Mosley writes that although the number of abortions in the United States continues to decline annually and is at the lowest level since Roe v. Wade, the rate of chemical abortions is at an all-time high.
Mosley reports that according to the latest statistics from the Guttmacher Institute, 39% of abortions in 2017 were medication-based or chemically induced—a 25% increase since 2014. And the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that from 2006 to 2015, “medication abortion” increased 114%.
“This rapid increase is primarily being driven by the abortion industry, which regards drug-based, do-it-yourself abortions as the best way to get around the many state-level pro-life laws being enacted around our country,” Mosley writes.
Mosley’s research paper cites the dangerous health effects of chemical abortions on women. Between 2000 and 2018, the Federal Drug Administration received reports of 4,195 adverse events related to chemical abortions, including 24 maternal deaths, 1,042 hospitalizations, 599 blood transfusions and 412 infections, not to mention the loss of unborn lives.
Known as the Mifeprex abortion pill regimen, babies up to 10 weeks old are routinely aborted despite having a heartbeat and brain activity and a fully formed head, hands, fingers, feet and toes.
“As the abortion industry continues to cleverly disguise their money-hungry business model as care for women, pro-life activists will need to stay vigilant and alert to counter the growing threat of chemical abortion,” Mosley writes.
Earlier this year, California passed similar legislation mandating public universities provide abortion pills.
“Abortion advocates once claimed that legalizing abortion would eliminate life-threatening risks to women,” Mosley concludes. “Now they are attempting to make abortion completely ‘self-managed’ despite the abortion pill’s life-threatening and health-damaging risks to women.”
