(Capital Territory, Australia) — The attempt to socially re-engineer society into a genderless ‘safe’ place has reached a new low, and it is by no means safe.
For the majority of Aussies, if something doesn’t personally affect them, they don’t care. But we must care because there are casualties to this agenda. The new casualties will be victims of assault in shared public toilets. Yes, that’s right. The de-gendering of society has reached a new low.
A few weeks ago, the latest changes to the National Construction Code were published. Normally, this would only include updates to matters such as fire safety and energy efficiency.
But not this time.
Among hundreds of pages of changes, there are a few lines which are not technical but ideological. The changes introduced new and unnecessary standards for public toilets. Sadly, these changes pandered to the anti-Christian ideology of those who seek to erase the biological basis of sex.
The changes include allowing up to half of the required number of single sex toilets in a building to be ‘all-gender’.
Let me explain.
Say there are only 8 toilets in a public facility, 4 male and 4 female. Under the new code, venues can reduce the number of single sex toilets to 2 each and then have 4 shared toilet spaces. Undoubtedly, this will lead to awkward decisions for men and women who desperately need to go and, against their modest inclinations, feel pressured by urgency to enter a shared space where someone of the opposite sex may be in the cubicle next door.
This change marks another milestone in the long march of activists who want to erase biological sex from Australia’s social and cultural life.
Australia Christian Lobby (ACL) has been pushing against this for a while. In early 2024, the Australian State and Territory Building Ministers agreed to consult on the proposed changes. We subsequently alerted supporters and made a submission with our concerns. We also separately wrote to the Australian Building Codes Board and Building Ministers. We pointed out that similar standards had been tried in the UK but had been removed following an inquiry. The UK inquiry found that gender-neutral toilets reduced access and safety for women and older people. We also argued that a risk assessment should have been carried out.
All-gender toilets will reduce the privacy, safety, and dignity provided to women and children. The changes would also be distressing for victims of sexual assault, and many Aussies who hold traditional views on modesty. Parents will have to be more diligent in supervising their children, even their teenagers who they would normally allow greater independence in public spaces.
The Australian Building Codes Board and Building Ministers largely dismissed ACL’s concerns. They also argued that because it is a voluntary pathway, the change is okay. This argument is both misleading and insulting. The changes to the National Code do not compel a developer to install all-gender toilets. However, if a developer decides to install all-gender toilets as allowed by the new standards, people will be compelled to use them if there are no single sex toilets available. All-gender toilets may be voluntary for developers; however, they will not be voluntary for the people who are left with no alternative.
The new standards will apply to a wide range of buildings, including offices, shopping centres, schools, universities, cinemas, clubs, and sports stadiums.
Activists have been chipping away at Australia’s gender laws for several decades. Their biggest triumphs include the 2013 changes to the Sex Discrimination Act, which removed the biological definitions of male and female, and the legalisation of same-sex marriage in 2017, which further normalised the redefinition of sex and family. Children are also now taught that they can choose their gender, and those with gender dysphoria are encouraged to transition socially and medically.
Gender ideologies infiltrated family television, sport, as well as business and government. The Governor General is even patron of Equality Australia, a political lobby group which exists to advance gender ideology. Few areas of Australian society are left untouched by gender ideology. That gender ideology has now reached toilets in public buildings, and it is not surprising.
The state of Australia’s morality is literally being flushed down the toilet. And it won’t stop here. Activists will likely be emboldened to have these standards expanded in the future.
So, what can we do to protect our toilets? The National Construction Code is scheduled to come into effect on 1st of May 2026. However, each state and territory has the authority to adopt or vary out the changes. This provides a short window to let politicians know we’re disgusted that Australia’s moral decline is now extending to toilets in public buildings. Politicians should be reminded that toilets are meant to be safe private spaces which cater to biology, not ideology.
