Protesters In Guatemala Break into Congress Building, Set Fire

Hundreds of protesters demonstrating against Guatemalan lawmakers’ decisions to approve a controversial budget that cut education and health spending broke into the countryโ€™s Congress building Saturday, setting part of it on fire.

Video on social media showed large flames shooting out of a window in the legislative building in Guatemala City as police used tear gas on protesters.

โ€œWe are outraged by poverty, injustice, the way they have stolen the publicโ€™s money,โ€ Rosa de Chavarria, a psychology professor, told The Associated Press.

Discontent had been building over the 2021 budget on social media and clashes erupted during demonstrations Friday.  Guatemalans were angered because lawmakers approved $65,000 to pay for meals for themselves, but cut funding for coronavirus patients and human rights agencies, among other things.

About 10,000 people hit the streets in front of the National Palace throughout the day Saturday to protest against corruption and a budget they say was negotiated and passed by legislators in secret.

The spending plan was approved before dawn Wednesday. It also passed while the country was distracted by the fallout of hurricanes Eta and Iota, which brought torrential rains to much of Central America.

“I feel like the future is being stolen from us. We donโ€™t see any changes, this cannot continue like this,โ€ said Mauricio Ramรญrez, a 20-year-old university student.

The fire inside the Congress building initially appeared to have affected legislative offices, rather than the main hall of congress. Protesters also set some bus stations on fire.

President Alejandro Giammattei condemned the fires on Twitter.

โ€œAnyone who is proven to have participated in the criminal acts will be punished with the full force of the law.” He wrote that he defended peopleโ€™s right to protest, โ€œbut neither can we allow people to vandalize public or private property.โ€

Protesters were also upset by recent moves by the nation’s Supreme Court and attorney general they saw as attempts to undermine the fight against corruption.

Vice President Guillermo Castillo has offered to resign, telling Giammattei that both men should step down โ€œfor the good of the country.” Castillo also suggested vetoing the approved budget, firing government officials and attempting more outreach to various sectors around the country.

Castillo said he would not resign alone.

โ€œIt was a devious blow to the people because Guatemala was between natural disasters, there are signs of government corruption, clientelism in the humanitarian aid,โ€ said Jordan Rodas, the countryโ€™s human rights prosecutor.

In Matthew 24, the disciples ask Jesus, โ€œWhat shall be the sign of thy coming, and the end of the world?โ€

Jesusโ€™s response is a detailed description of the condition of the world and what it will look like in the last days. Wars and rumours of wars, nation rising against nation, famines, pestilences, earthquakes, these being the beginning of sorrows. He depicts persecution and an abounding iniquity that would cause the love of many to wax cold and divisions that would cause loved ones to betray one another.

In Luke 21:25, Jesus says,ย โ€œThere will be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earthย Distress of Nations with Perplexity, the seas and the wave roaring.โ€

With the current global state of turmoil amongst the nations, we canโ€™t help but recognize the distress of nations Jesus describes in Luke 21 and Matthew 24, matching what we see today.

The Hunt For Eichmann: Israel’s Daring Mission To Capture A Man With The Blood Of Millions On His Hands

The plan to abduct Eichmann, dubbed Operation Finale, was a complex mission involving Mossad agents and a civilian physician who entered Argentina during its 150th anniversary celebration of independence from Spain. The timing was crucial, as Israelโ€™s airline El Al did not normally fly to South America, but a government delegation provided cover for the operation. โ€œDead or alive,โ€ Prime Minister David Ben Gurion told Harel before he left on the mission, โ€œjust bring Eichmann back with you. โ€ฆ Preferably alive. It would be very important, morally, for the young generations of Israel.โ€

Arguments Conclude In Preliminary Hearing For Accused Killer Of Charlie Kirk

Arguments concluded Friday in the preliminary hearing of the man accused of assassinating Charlie Kirk last fall. Tyler Robinsonโ€™s defense team attempted to cast doubt on video, ballistics, and DNA evidence. Meanwhile, prosecutors showcased multiple videos of what appeared to be Robinson on the Utah campus the day of the shooting, and digital messages in which Robinson seems to confess to the murder.

Will America Last Another 250 Years?

Looking back, there can be no denying that God has indeed shed His graceโ€”His unmerited favorโ€”on our land, from sea to shining sea. But does our national โ€œsoulโ€ encourage self-control? Do our laws champion ordered liberty? Is our success tempered with nobleness? Is brotherhood the defining characteristic of any good we aspire to reflect? By all of those measures, America seems decidedly adrift. We are drifting farther and farther from Natureโ€™s Godโ€”the Ruler of the Universe our Founders called upon and credited with for our celebrated independence.
