Charges Dropped Against UK Woman For Silently Praying: ‘Her Story Has Put The World On Notice’

After a six-month investigation, police in Birmingham, England have dropped charges against a woman arrested last March for praying silently near an abortion clinic, and apologized for the length of time they took to clear her.

After Isabel Vaughan-Spruceโ€™s arrest on March 6, video of her conversation with the arresting police officer went viral. Police accused Vaughan-Spruce of violating a local order that bans activities, including prayer, that could constitute protesting within an โ€œexclusion zoneโ€ near abortion clinics.

โ€œYouโ€™ve said youโ€™re engaging in prayer, which is the offense,โ€ an officer is heard saying on the video.

โ€œSilent prayer,โ€ replied Vaughn-Spruce, director of the U.K. March for Life.

โ€œYou were still engaging in prayer, which is the offense,โ€ the policeman answers.

The conclusion of Vaughan-Spruceโ€™s case and the cityโ€™s apology came a week after U.K. Home Secretary Suella Braverman wrote in an open letter that โ€œsilent prayer, within itself, is not unlawful.โ€

Vaughan-Spruce said in a statement, โ€œThis isnโ€™t 1984, but 2023. I should never have been arrested or investigated simply for the thoughts I held in my own mind.โ€

Her arrest in March marked the second time Birmingham police had arrested Vaughan-Spruce for praying near an abortion clinic. Police arrested her in 2022, then dropped those charges last February, although they signaled they might resume prosecution of her at a later date. Police then arrested her again in March on the same charge.

With charges now dropped and the law seemingly clarified, Vaughan-Spruce said she plans to continue silent prayer on public sidewalks near abortion clinics.

โ€œThe arduous process of this criminal ordeal has been the punishment for Isabel,โ€ said Jeremiah Igunnubole, legal counsel for ADF UK, who aided Vaughan-Spruceโ€™s legal defense. โ€œMoreover, her story has put the world on notice that fundamental freedoms are vulnerable in the UK.

โ€œThere is now an urgent need for legal changes to stem the tide of policing by politics. We hope the decision from West Midlands Police that they will not prosecute free thought, alongside the Home Secretaryโ€™s public commitment to protecting silent prayer, will be reflected in legislation, guidance, and practice,โ€ Igunnubole stated.

A Calculated Spiritual Battle: Why The Abortion Industry Is Working To Invade Christian Universities

The Devil's evil, but he isn't dumb. Satan already owns Hollywood, academia, and mainstream media. What the Devil, Planned Parenthood, and the abortion industry want is a foothold in the churchโ€”specifically, the next generation of the church. Sadly, some so-called "Christians" are opening the door.

Theological Amnesia: The Danger Of The Church Forgetting Israel

When the church forgets Israel, arrogance often followsโ€”and arrogance breeds antisemitism. Church history bears painful witness to this. Yet antisemitism is again on the rise. Replacement theology, by denying Israelโ€™s place in Godโ€™s plan, risks fueling this hatred anew. Antisemitism is an affront to Godโ€™s heart. His love for Israel has never expired, and Genesis 12:3 still stands: โ€œI will bless those who bless you, and I will curse him who curses you.โ€ Antisemites hate what God loves.

Is the Rapture real? Thereโ€™s always debate around this topic. Letโ€™s start with the obvious: the Rapture sounds crazy. Jesus descends from Heaven, dead people rise from their graves, and living believers are suddenly caught up into the skyโ€”like the worldโ€™s strangest episode of โ€œStranger Things.โ€ Sounds like the stuff your uncle mutters about after three cups of church coffee. Exceptโ€”the Rapture is right there in Scripture. Paul says it. John says it. Jesus says it.
