Ray Comfort: How Does the Bible Define Sin?

I am sometimes criticized as a heretic for telling sinners that they must turn from their sins. Some claim this teaches works-based righteousness. Nothing could be further from the truth.

The Bible is crystal clear that we are savedย by grace alone, not by our own works: โ€œFor by grace you have been saved through faithโ€ฆ not of works, lest anyone should boastโ€ (Ephesians 2:8โ€“9).

Repentance is not a work by which we earn salvation. It is the God-ordained response to the gospel. Scripture repeatedly joins repentance and faith together:

  • โ€œRepent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted outโ€ฆโ€ (Acts 3:19)
  • โ€œRepent, and believe in the gospel.โ€ (Mark 1:15)
  • โ€œGodโ€ฆ commands all men everywhere to repent.โ€ (Acts 17:30)
  • Paul testified, โ€œrepentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.โ€ (Acts 20:21)

The subtle error I often encounter is redefining sin itself. Rather than accepting the Bibleโ€™s definition, some argue that sin is simplyย โ€œfailing to believe in Jesus.โ€ They citeย John 16:8โ€“9: โ€œAnd when He has come, He will convict the world of sinโ€ฆ because they do not believe in Me.โ€

From this, they conclude that unbelief is the only sin that matters. The implication is alarming. A person could continue lying, stealing, committing adultery, lusting, or living in fornication and still claim to be right with God because he has โ€œbelieved in Jesus.โ€ In this view, the only sin he needed to turn from was unbelief.

But that is not how Scripture defines sin. John tells us plainly: โ€œSin is the transgression of the lawโ€ (1 John 3:4). Paul says: โ€œWhere there is no law there is no transgressionโ€ (Romans 4:15). And: โ€œBy the law is the knowledge of sinโ€ (Romans 3:20).

Godโ€™s Law exposes our guilt. It reveals that we are liars, thieves, blasphemers, adulterers at heart, and idolaters. That is why Jesus preached the Law so forcefully in the Sermon on the Mount, showing that lust is adultery in the heart and hatred is murder in the heart (Matthew 5:21โ€“30). He exposed sin before offering grace. What did Jesus mean inย John 16:8โ€“9?

He was not redefining sin. Rather, He was explaining why the world stands condemned. The greatest expression of humanityโ€™s rebellion is its rejection of Godโ€™s Son. Those who refuse Christ remain under Godโ€™s wrath because they reject the only Savior who can deliver them from their sins.

Jesus Himself said: โ€œIf you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sinsโ€ (John 8:24).

Notice that He did not say they would die for the sin of unbelief, but for their sins. Unbelief leaves people under the guilt of all their transgressions because they have rejected the only One who can forgive them.

Imagine a tribe deep in the Amazon who has never heard the name of Jesus. Are they guilty before God?

Scripture answers yesโ€”not because they have rejected a Savior they have never heard of, but because they have sinned against the light God has given them. Romans 1ย says they are โ€œwithout excuseโ€ because Godโ€™s eternal power and divine nature are evident in creation (Romans 1:18โ€“20). Romans 2ย says that even those without the written Law have the work of the Law written on their hearts, with their conscience bearing witness (Romans 2:14โ€“16).

If unbelief in Jesus were the very definition of sin, those who had never heard of Him would be innocent until someone preached the gospel to them. But Scripture never teaches that. It teaches thatย all have sinnedย (seeย Romans 3:23) and that Jesus Christ came to save sinners from their sins.

This is why we must follow the example of John the Baptist, Jesus, Peter, and Paul.

John the Baptist preached: โ€œRepent, for the kingdom of heaven is at handโ€ (Matthew 3:2).

Jesus preached: โ€œRepent, and believe in the gospelโ€ (Mark 1:15).

Peter preached: โ€œRepentโ€ฆ for the remission of sinsโ€ (Acts 2:38).

Paul declared that God โ€œcommands all men everywhere to repentโ€ (Acts 17:30).

We are not saved by repentance. We are saved by Godโ€™s grace through faith in Jesus Christ. Yet the faith that saves is inseparable from repentance. We turn to Jesus because we have turned from sin. That is the consistent message of Scripture.

Nine of the nationโ€™s largest banks relied on subjective decision-making and the opinions of advocacy organizations to terminate customer accounts or deny service to potential customersโ€”often because of Biblical beliefs on key moral issuesโ€”between 2020 and September 2025. The findings, released Wednesday, were part of a report from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC), the bureau of the U.S. Department of the Treasury that charters, regulates, and supervises banks and federal savings associations.

No More Excuses Or Theological Gymnastics: Christians Are Called To Love The Jewish People

I love all my brothers and sisters in Christ, but Iโ€™m wounded when I hear fellow believers dismiss or attack Israel and the Jewish people. The laundry list of excuses for this behavior includes many acrobatic contortions of Scripture that distance Christians from Jewish people. Antisemitic tropes also play a part in these condemnations. So does misinformation about the Jewish nation, as many Christians understand little of the State of Israelโ€™s history of fighting for its life in defensive wars. They look at the nationโ€™s activity in Gaza and Iran as an unforgivable sin because of the negative optics of military conflict, and they refuse to honor Scriptureโ€™s call to bless His Chosen Peopleโ€”even those who have never set foot in Israeli land.

In A Culture Of Trendy Lies, It Is Time To Speak Up More Clearly In Support Of Israel And The Jewish People

We must remember our friends and our allies around the worldโ€”particularly Israel and the Jewish people, the one distinct ethnic group of people about which God tells us in His Word to bless and to support. In Genesis 12:3, what did God say to Abraham? โ€œI will bless those who bless you.โ€ Yet many people these days, including a lot of Christians, think that it is trendy, intellectual-sounding, or will garner clicks to oppose things all related to the Jews. Anti-Semitism is on the rise around the world. 2025 was designated by the Anti-Defamation League as the deadliest year of anti-Semitism. Three months after October 7th in 2023, anti-Semitism had risen 360%.
