The ACLU, in wanting to sue the state of Louisiana, has done us a great favor. Their lawsuit was big news in the secular media, and so the Ten Commandments have been featured in many outlets, from Newsweek, Time magazine,ย USA Today, and theย New York Timesย to CNN, MSNBC, NBC, ABC, and Fox. Theyโve been featured on huge podcasts, onย The View, and all throughout social media. Comedian Jimmy Kimmel even quoted all of the Ten Commandments to his massive viewing audience. You canโt buy that sort of publicity!
I therefore sent them a huge gift basketโfilled with all sorts of delicious chocolatesโand a thank you card that said: “Thank you for publicizing the Ten Commandments. America needs to be reminded of Godโs Law, and youโve certainly done that. Very grateful.”
America is no different than Old Testament Israel who forgot the Ten Commandments and consequently gave themselves to sin. And the reason they did so was because of the sin of idolatry. When we forsake the Lawโwhich forbids making up false gods and committing adulteryโwe tend to make up our own congenial image of God and run headlong into sexual sin. And thatโs whatโs happened to the United States.
The only thing that will wake up a nation to its sin is a fresh look at the Ten Commandments (seeย Romans 7:7). This was the case when King Josiah read the Law and suddenly saw the serious nature of sin. He said:
2 Kings 22:13 KJV – “…Great is the wrath of theย Lordย that is kindled against us, because our fathers have not hearkened unto the words of this book, to do according unto all that which is written concerning us.”
The Worldโs Concern
The secular worldโs big concern is that showing the Ten Commandments to kids is an egregious mixing of church and state.ย However, the โseparationโ of church and state is a myth. Jamesย Madison,ย the fourth president of the US, known as the โFatherย ofย theย Constitution,โ said this:
We have staked the whole of all our political institutions upon the capacity of mankind for self-governmentโฆto sustain ourselves according to the Ten Commandments of God.
Every session of Congress begins with a prayer by a paid preacher whose salary has been paid by the taxpayer since 1777. And as you enter the Supreme Court courtroom, the two huge oak doors have the Ten Commandments engraved on the lower portion of each door.
So, God bless the ACLU for making this such big news. God is still turning what men mean for evil into that which is for the good.
